  • American Capital Agency: What The Heck Is Going On Here? [View article]
I think the author's statement "last KNOWN book value" (emphasis mine) is telling and a giant caution flag to any investors tempted to buy in at the depressed PPS levels. There is yet another shoe to drop, IMO.

Doesn't it have to pass both houses of congress to become law?

I wouldn't exactly rate the NYT as a beacon of objectivity, either.

Clever folk, these Iranians. Dangling a little carrot for our gullible leaders to nibble on, not to mention the corporate execs with dollar signs in their eyes.

  • United-Guardian: A Recession-proof Income Stock [View article]
    Hi Robert,

I don't see the same dividend payout ratio numbers you do.

Rather than squinting my old slightly color blind eyes at F.A.S.T graphs, I use Morningstar's Key Ratios Data, which is a table with actual numbers.

They show, from '09 thru '12, payout ratios of 76.5, 78.6. 78.0, and 81.8, respectively. TTM is 91.

Also, it shows a steady, if not spectacular, record of both earnings and dividend raises over the last ten years.

Finally, FCF covers the dividend also, which is an important metric for me.

All in all, UG (they should change their symbol) looks like a pretty safe stock to me.

    Regards,

How about a drone to collect past due payments? It could be big and muscular with a broken nose. Could name it the VitoDrone.

  • I Found An Attractive Margin Of Safety In Home Properties [View article]
    Brad,

I notice also that for the last two years that actual earnings have actually covered the dividend, a rarity in many eREITs, including O.

D/E is a bit higher than the sector average, however.

  • Ship Finance Poised To Start Growing The Already Attractive 9% Dividend [View article]
    Tim,

I have been following SFL for several years, but having missed the boat (pun intended) when it was in the single digits, I'm not going to compound the felony by buying it now so close to it's 52 week high. A pullback into the low teens would be enticing, though.

As you write, this one's not for the faint of heart, as it can be subjected to lots of headwinds.

  • ModernGraham Valuation Of Exelon [View article]
    @pillager,

Thanks for your lecture about the relative value of a stock after it splits, but I didn't need it.

Where in my comment did I say I would buy it (or recommend buying it) post-split?

I mentioned that shareholders think a split is overdue, period.

FYI, companies split their shares when they get too pricey for mom and pop investors.

  • Buy Novartis For A Safe And Growing Income [View article]
I'm looking for a pharma to go along with ABBV, which I kept after the split.

NVS is probably the most interesting of the bunch, but not at current PPS levels. $70 would be my entry point. Not trying to time, just want good value.

  • Retiree: What Role Should High Yield Play In A Distribution Stage Portfolio? [View article]
    Bob,

I agree that chasing yield alone is a pretty elementary no-no.

In the mREIT area, I continue to hold DX because it is a hybrid (with some variable rate products), and not as susceptible to spread squeeze as the agency products.

Similarly, I hold ARCC as it is one of the most solid BDC's out there, along with MAIN, which I will purchase at or under 30.

I try to look for the best-in-breed in all the asset classes.
