  • ConocoPhillips: Jasmine Wells Most Prolific In The Corporation [View article]
A very innovative oil company, whose management seems to think out of the box.

Long at 57, and nice to see the recent dividend hike.

    arthur,

3 months later and it looks like it may well happen, not raising rates, but lessening the bond buying. Maybe before year end. Either way, a negative?

  • Don't Take Your Screeners Too Seriously [View article]
I have found two screeners which are helpful. One is Fidelity, the other Schwab. I have accounts at both. These are the only two which provide all the dividend metrics I want. Both are fairly easy to use. M* premium also has a comprehensive one, which lets you tailor the results to further metrics, but it is a bit wonky to use for beginners.

However, even inputting the same requirements for Schwab and Fidelity, I've found that also adding sectors and also analyst opinion provide the variables. Their analyst bases are not the same. Adding the last two, I will sometimes come up with two completely different lists of companies.

But, they do provide a basis for further research. Going to look at trademason.com as mentioned by previous commenter VideoFan.

    Thanks.

    joe....

I think that you have to look at the institutions who own these things and check out their overall risk level.

  • American Capital Agency's Management Presents at Citi Global Financial Conference (Transcript) [View article]
    Cap'n,

Understand your frustration over losing money with these murky vehicles. I did as well, although they were a small percentage of my portfolio. Still......

My post mortem included coming to the realization that, possessing only a general, rather superficial knowledge of these mREITs, I never should have bought them in the first place. Ability to read balance sheets and do some fundamental analysis doesn't suffice for these type vehicles.

I'm sticking with stocks of companies who make or do things that I can see and understand.

    Keep the powder dry.

Mullally is a team builder and would be the CEO of choice, in my opinion.

Oh, everyone should stop writing about MSFT as if they're on the verge of collapse. They're not. Many corporations would like to have their "problems".

    aka,

The mREIT crowd has taken on cult status, particularly the NLY and AGNC afficianados. Fuggitaboutit.

    Keep up the good work.

P.S. I do own a few hundred shares of DX, which I think is the best of the bunch. About 1/2% of my portfolio.

  • Stop The Presses: Academics Confirm That Buffett's Success Is No Mystery [View article]
All this banter, dissecting Buffet's moves, analyzing and criticizing them, is nonsense.

Fact is, Buffet is a gadzillionaire, and could buy and sell every critical author and academic put together 1,000 times over. What more proof does anyone need that his methods are successful?

Of course I understand all that. I was trying to be a little subtle with the author.

HNZ. Maybe you are smarter than Warren. But, not often or for long. Let me know when you're worth a few hundred gadzillion like he is.

Since Buffett sold, COP has been down. Cause and effect, or does he know something we don't? I'd bet on the latter.
