  • Exelon: 30% Undervalued With A 4.2% Yield While Waiting For Earnings To Normalize [View article]
    @Bruce

    EPS 1.01 Dividend 1.24

Of course they will cut it again. Since when has EXC shown any regard whatsoever for shareholders?

You mean that you weren't aware that your payouts were being reported on a 1099 and not a K-1 ???

  • Bonds: A Dividend Growth Investor's Best Friend? [View article]
    Crank,

Great article. I've also been puzzled about all the angst over RISING bond yields, and FALLING prices.

Wouldn't this be a great time for someone uninvested in fixed income to be buying in?

Are we missing some nuance here? Otherwise, I'm with you.

  • General Electric: Aviation, Oil And Gas Segments Fuel Earnings [View article]
WSJ reported recently that GE jet engines have reported icing problems in Boeing airliners. This is a problem that was supposedly solved years ago, at least by Pratt & Whitney and Rolls Royce. GE is reportedly 'studying' the issue.

In an unrelated dilemma, one of their massive devices destined for the Canadian shale fields, the size of the space shuttle, is stranded at a west coast port because of problems with highway right of way restrictions. Estimates are up to $75million to disassemble it and ship it in pieces.

This is still the gang who can't shoot straight. Remember, they can't even make a reliable refrigerator.

  • Wunderlich starts coverage of several lower-risk, high-yield MLPs [View news story]
I just don't understand the enthusiasm about VNR. Ok, so they hedge. But, they have a negative EPS of -$3+ and have posted losses for 5 years out of 7 reporting. Their D/E is 50% higher than their industry average. Their overall debt is staggering. This is a house of cards ready to collapse.

No, I'm not short VNR, or any other stock. Not that it would matter anyway.

  • How To Protect Your Muni Bonds During Detroit's Bankruptcy [View article]
    Author,

    Please........

Why should people who had no hand in bankrupting this city in the first place have to bail it out?

"You use Detroit, pay for what you use...."
Let's say somebody works in Detroit, do they not pay a city income tax? If they come in for an athletic, museum, or any other event in a fixed venue, do they not pay tax on that ticket? Etc., etc., etc.

Your line of reasoning promotes irresponsible behavior and is espoused by too many in this country, indeed, world. Yeah, let's get ourselves into financial trouble and have somebody else finance our way out of it. Doesn't matter where, Greece, Detroit, etc.

Sorry, your philosophy is a proven failure. Unfortunately, too many people haven't yet gotten the memo.

  • Time To Up Exposure To REITs? [View article]
I go back far enough to remember double digit CD and Money Market rates in the early 80's. "Investing" then was a no-brainer.

Downside was that inflation was also in the teens.

Grabbed a small position in O @$39. I think at that price I'm kind of protected on the downside. But, would buy more if it went lower, subject to a favorable interest rate outlook for the going forward period of 12-18 months.

  • Is Williams-Sonoma The Next Best Buy? [View article]
"The company has been increasing its dividends for the past 8 years....."

It paid $.48 in 2009 and 2010. If you are screening, a five year figure can be deceptive. It is usually an average over that period, not necessarily indicative of year to year bumps.

That said, the fundamentals look great and is a buy on a pullback, because I agree that the yield is too low at current EPS.

Speaking of regionals (or not), I like PFS. Nice fundamentals, decent payout and a good track record.

A little pricey at the moment--would like to see EPS closer to the middle of the 52 week range.

    Thanks.

    trin & klg,

Not a bad idea to start a subscription service.......We could call it the Contrarian's Contrarian Equity Newsletter. Or, Don't Do What We Do.

But, with our luck, we'd turn out to be right; then our subscribers would be all up in arms, demand their money back and sue us, too.

  • Kinder Morgan Inc. Remains A Solid Choice For Dividend-Growth Investors [View article]
    Pen,

I was waiting for somebody to bring that point up. Essentially, one is really buying KMP units with a built-in DRIP. Also, KMR reports on a 1099, not a K-1, so it is appropriate for traditional IRA accounts.

    Thanks.

    Held the company pre-spinoff.

Grew impatient with ABT and sold it a couple of weeks ago. Another fine mess I've got myself into.

I am a reliable contrarian indicator.

    Still holding ABBV, though.

    Geez.
