The negativity might be due to the sector, not the company.

Agree, Bret. Since spinning off Phillips, COP seems to have been making the right moves. I like particularly their selling of some peripheral assets.

Results? Nice dividend (which they will hopefully increase soon), and good pps appreciation thus far.

  • The Upside Is Better Than The Downside: An Analysis Of Vanguard's VYM [View article]
    oldman,

While both are fine ETFs, VYM's yield is about 25 bp higher than SCHD, which more than offsets the slight expense edge Schwab has.

And besides, Vanguard is Vanguard; they've been at this a lot longer and have more in house resources than Schwab. It's one of their core businesses, not an offshoot from a brokerage house.

  • A Diversified Fund Of MLPs Yielding 5.2%, No K-1s And Significant Upside Potential [View article]
    Michael,

    RE: NAV Premium--Current (8/24) NAV is $42.20
    PPS is $44.36
Simple math shows it to be a 3.36% premium. This changed since nearly a week ago.

RE: DISTRIBUTION -- Current dist. is 5.16%. Expenses are 1.72%. Doesn't that make the actual yield 3.53%? Or am I calculating this incorrectly?

Your financial analyses on both the MLP and mREIT sectors are outstanding. Keep up the good work.

  • Assessing American Capital Agency's Dividend Sustainability: 2Q13 Update [View article]
These mREITs have business models which are very difficult to completely understand. Too many paper machinations.

So, to paraphrase Buffet, if you don't understand it, don't own it.

Totally agree, Bob....it's a sound choice for the more conservative investor who wants moderate DGR via exposure to a bunch of blue chip stocks.. Expenses are very low as well.

It's selling exactly at it's NAV, which also makes it a decent value at this time.

  • Crosstex Energy: An Oil & Gas Investment For Everyone [View article]
Frankly, I don't see the case here, given their negative earnings, cash flow and mountainous debt. These metrics don't support the thesis for future share and dividend growth.

Could you maybe discuss a little more the prospects you see for future success?

  • Utilities - Today's Best Bond Alternative [View article]
Already long for years in two of the best; SRE & NEE.

Aren't utilities heavily dependent on short term borrowing? Thus, higher interest rates are very detrimental for them.

So what you're saying is that it might turn out ok and it might not. Great criteria to invest in anything. Very astute. My only regret is plowing through your meaningless comment.

Minutes from the Fed meeting this week indicate more blathering and dithering. In other words, they don't know what to do. Wouldn't count on any tapering in Sept.

  • Why I Sold ConocoPhillips With Its Juicy Yield [View article]
If you are a long term investor and not a trader, COP is the one to hold, IMO.

In your discussion, you didn't mention RIG's volatility, beta of 1.98. Also their sketchy dividend history.

I would agree that there is room for capital appreciation, since the pps is roughly half of what it was in late '10.

    Buckle the seat belts.
