    @christinebitg,

    Watch out for VNR. Mountains of debt. Recently issued 80mm shares of common. They do hedge, but debt is debt.

    A while back, I read their 2011 10K. I didn't like what I saw. They developed nothing, acquired everything with debt. To quote (over and over) "........This acquisition was funded with borrowings under financing arrangements existing at that time....."

    Those bullish on this company say, well, that's all right because they're hedging. Hedging, schmedging, debt is debt and continually piling it on is unsustainable.

    The chickens are coming home to roost now as far as I'm concerned

  • ConocoPhillips (COP -4.7%) stumbles nearly 5% a day after issuing a disappointing 2013 production forecast of 1.475M-1.525M boe/day, with a significant Q2-Q3 dip due to seasonality, planned maintenance and project tie-ins. “Production will decline in ’13, and [COP] will need to show as we move forward that they can grow off that 2013 base," according to one analyst. [View news story]

    Who besides M* rates these CEFs? M* only analyzes a fraction of them.

    @curt...

    Thanks for the link. I'm registered and using the screener.

    Problem is, there are a myriad of CEFs, and no real analyst rating system. Morningstar comes the closest, but they only examine a tiny fraction. Anything else?

    Thanks.

  • Weighing The Week Ahead: Time To Take The Plunge? [View article]
    @Richjoy403,

    You said, regarding Buffett's quotation,

    << I don't feel it fits the present situation.......... >>

    Oh, so you're saying, "IT'S DIFFERENT THIS TIME?"

    Gee, let me think....when have I heard this before? Oh, right, it was pre-2000, and pre-2008, the latter for both the housing and stock market, just to cite recent history. How'd that work out for everyone who rushed in at the apex?

    Well, I still call the individual investors who pile in at the end of a bull market lemmings; no, mindless lemmings. They succumb to George Acs' FOMO (fear of missing out) and are the same ones who sell at the bottom. In other words, they buy high and sell low. Been there, did that (more than once), and finally wised up.

    I bought a bunch of stock in solid companies back in 2009 (fearful). They've all done handsomely. No astute judgments on my part......one could have thrown a dart back then.

    So, Buffett's famous phrase needs no qualification. It holds true all the time, even (or especially) when it's "different".
    Thanks,

  • 6 REITs For Monthly Income [View article]
    @charliezap,

    Stupid question....

    Where is FFO found on income statements? Most don't list it. Or do you have to do the math you described to come up with it? It's not the same as Cash From Operations, right?

    ARR is appealing because it's a hybrid and offers diversification in the mREIT sector

    Thanks,

    Yeah, composition and set up was kind of sloppy. Got the gist of it, though.

    @ricksteph,

    Careful, YOUR political persuasion slip is showing.

    Anything that lessens the negative effect today's unions have on businesses (can you say Hostess?) and the economy is a positive thing, and Walker's actions in WI have done just that. Companies are voting with their feet--to get into the state now.
