Very interesting article on some scarcely covered companies. TROW has an excellent history of raising dividends, also.

    Thanks.

  • Analyzing Growing Premiums In High-Yield Bond CEFs [View article]
Thanks, Alan, for the article on CEFs. They are somewhat mysterious instruments and I want to learn all I can about them (not just the junk ones, either).

What are your thoughts on FAX and ACG? The latter is trading at a substantial discount to NAV, and has low expenses, but I have never been a fan of Alliance Bernstein. FAX gives exposure to the Asian markets, but is at a pretty rich premium.

    Thanks!

I have held HIO for years, and am glad to see a little price stability, indeed appreciation.

I like the fact that they are not leveraged, and are very conservatively managed. Their earnings have not matched distributions recently and management has lowered the payout as a result. I prefer this to a destructive return of capital. Their expenses are among the lowest in the industry, also.

    Brad,

Interesting article and very intelligent comments.

When you do your interview with Rollins, will you be pinning it to this article, or creating a new one?

    Thanks!

    Everyone,

Quit sparring with T I I. You're just encouraging him. Ignore him and maybe he'll go away.

A wordsmith The Independent Investor is not.

His first grade spelling and grammar teacher would have slapped his hand a dozen times by now, if he/she even made it through his unintelligible and nonsensical five hundred word diatribe.

  • Weyerhaeuser: A Timber REIT To Buy On Dividend Growth [View article]
    I don't share everyone's enthusiasm for WY.

    -Dividend is a paltry 2.4%.
    -Overdue for a dividend increase. It's been $ .15 since 2/11.
-PPS is at a yearly high.

    Chuck,

    As always, love the graphs.

At 72%, HNZ's payout ratio is a little high (ttm earnings used).

Agree that it's a great company, though.

"...dividend rate was declared on the POTENTIAL (caps mine) earnings......."

So, they're paying dividends of earnings they haven't made yet? Sounds a little Ponzi-ish to me.

Your article is quite timely, as it points out just how risky these investments are if not followed very closely. I'll be looking forward to your analyses on some more of these companies.

    Thanks.

It's so hard to figure out a trend. Everything is so volatile these days, upside and downside.

Thanks for the reply. The discussions are much more lively when authors participate.

Nice article, too, even though I demur in part. Now following you as a result. Hope you'll be writing more about dividend investing.

  • 4 Consistent Dividend Payers For Income Investors [View article]
    RedCar,

I'm "old" too. I remember the early 80's when money markets were paying up to 15% (of course inflation was even higher).

"Investing" was a no-brainer then. I agree--too much work nowadays.

    Chow,

Go back to Aug. 28 for my response to your response to my comment.

That would be about 40 comments ago. To bad there hasn't been much interest in this article! :-)

    Thks.

    CHOW,

And I, VERY respectfully as well, will counterpoint.

I'm not looking for cheap, because there can be lots of bad reasons for a stock being cheap. I think I'm just a LITTLE more savvy than that. I do do due (easy for you to say!) diligence.

I just think that, GENERALLY speaking, it's not a good idea to buy at tops. You cite O as an example of a stock at the top that went higher. Well, first of all REITs are different animals which I don't think can be used as a broad brush example. Besides, you could have thrown a dart at the S&P 500 in '09 and come up a winner today. I know I did.

I will cite CAT, for whom nearly every analyst was cheerleading when it was at $116 within the past 52 weeks. Today, it's $85, and I don't think it's a worse company at $30 pps less. In fact I think they are a great company and would buy in if their dividend % was higher. My threshold is 3% or higher.

    That's all. Thanks.
