  • The Market Gets An 'F' In Math In The Valuation Of National Research Corp. [View article]
Yikes! Sure glad I came from NCRI's very vague website to SA for clarification. I only knew that A & B shares were going to be offered. Now, I know the ratio, but not much else, including for sure why it was done this way. The confusion is mine, not because of SA. Most of you commenters really have a handle on this topic as well as the author, of course.
    .
What's really confusing, though, is what the hell does this company do in the medical field exactly? Are they a think tank, a systems provider, a consultant, or what?

Every source lists the "B" shares as paying a 7.10% dividend, which they cover nicely with earnings and cash flow, too. Now if the CEO's compensation comes from primarily dividends, isn't it reasonable to figure that they will be reinstated without undue delay?

And Denver.....you're right about the shares. A tanked today, B was up.

In fact, Mr. Thomas wrote a lengthy explanation some time ago.exclusively on this subject. Suggest the doubters do an easy search of his archival articles.

  • Oversold And Undervalued: This High Dividend Stock Will Profit From Growing U.S. Exports [View article]
Previous article over three months ago also talked about how undervalued TLP is.

Maybe there's good reason for the undervaluation?

Brad has covered this subject pretty completely in a previous article. You might want to search the archives for it.

  • Retired Investors: Is It Time To Consider A New Investment Strategy? [View article]
    Bob,

To paraphrase, you say that your strategy has allowed you to realize yields double the S&P 500 index. Are you talking about total return, or strictly dividend yields?

It seems that yours is a fluid strategy, subject to regular tweaking.

    Thanks.

  • Royal Dutch Shell: A Royal But Risky Opportunity To Reap Rich Rewards [View article]
A very capable article. Pertinent facts, pros and cons presented in a very concise and cogent manner. Very readable.

Regarding the dividends, I think it's relatively safe, even if some of the negative scenarios you list occur. Their current payout ratio is comfortably under 50%, so there's a fairly wide margin for error.

I would be a buyer (RDS-B) at around 65 or lower and hold for the long term.

    Long CVX.

    Thanks.

  • The June From Hell For 20% Dividend Payer Western Asset Mortgage Capital Corp. [View article]
    Vertical.....

Why are you blaming somebody else for your investing mistake? Everyone has a mind of their own and should do their own due diligence.

If you don't understand an investment class well enough to make your own final decision, then you shouldn't invest in that sector in the first place.

The supposed new release was at 0928 this morning. It is 3:20 p.m. LNCO is up $.62 and LINE is up $.20

Six hours later, Mr. Market apparently has not yet gotten the word

  • Are Gold Miner Stocks Oversold? [View article]
    Arie,

What are your thoughts on an ETF such as GGN which holds an index of the largest mining companies? It also pays an unrealistically high distribution, of which about 30% is currently return of capital.

It's in the Gabelli family, which is either good, bad or both, depending on whose opinion it is.

    Thanks.

  • Exelon (EXC -0.8%) is highlighted as a likely long-term winner in a Bloomberg analysis of Pres. Obama's plan to cut carbon emissions. EXC emits a quarter of the greenhouse gases of its next-cleanest competitor to generate the same amount of power, Bernstein analysts say, giving it an advantage if government policies crimp the output of competitors. [View news story]
What's EXC going to do to achieve this miraculous turnaround, get a management transplant?

Besides, Obama's plan is NATO (No Action, Talk Only). He's beholden to too many special interests.

  • Fifth Street: A Billionaire And Insiders Are Bullish On This 12% Yielder [View article]
Potential BDC investors better have the knowledge to do thorough due diligence on these murky investments before buying.

Even a more conservative company like FSC has stepped up risk over the past couple of years, migrating toward debt that is lower in the capital structure, meaning that they may have to stand in the back of the line to recover assets in case of default.

Furthermore, many BDCs have apparently been buying up CLO tranches again. Anyone remember 2008?
