  • Adding Triangle Capital, Main Street Capital And BCE Inc. To Retirement Income Portfolio  [View article]
Interesting that you hold MNR, as they violate the Fish, Chowder, and just about every DGR rule, because they've had no dividend increases. And, the CEO, Michael Landy, has clearly stated that there probably won't be any in the forseeable future.

MNR is heavily reliant on one tenant, FedEx. They are also awash in debt.

Finally, their sister company, UMH, which is operated by the same management, is a chronic loser in the manufactured home business. MNR's filings clearly state this symbiotic relationship as a potential risk (and conflict of interest) factor.

This is one I've avoided for the above reasons.

    Thanks.

Less expensive, but not better than VEA. Divvy is a full percentage point less than VEA.

    Cap'n* Brian,

You guys at the coffee shop have a lot of good common sense. Even after the caffeine and sugar highs wear off.

*I think you deserve a promotion to Commodore.

".....general arrogance", in reference to CAT's mgmt.

I would substitute "no nonsense". I particularly liked the way they handled the Canadian strike thing.

  • Shell: 7%+ Dividend Growth Is Possible  [View article]
The new CEO has hit the ground running and I like what he's done so far, which is mostly divest losing ventures. I feel good about RDS' prospects going forward.

Long RDS-B @ $67.35 and am a happy camper so far.

  • Consider Buying Western Asset Mortgage Capital Now  [View article]
Despite the dividend reduction, ~18% falls into the 'too good to be true' category, and is probably unsustainable.

This one is for traders and speculators, not investors, IMO.

You'd probably also be complaining if he wasn't long...asking why no skin in the game.

  • Shell expresses both optimism, caution on future of Pennsylvania plant  [View news story]
I understand the reason for the geography; shale fields, river access for feedstocks, etc., but Pennsylvania, aka union heaven? Ask VW how that state worked out for them.

Wouldn't W.Va. have presented a slightly more favorable business climate yet with the above advantages?

  • 4 Muni Bond CEFs That Combine Tax-Exempt Income With Some Upside Potential  [View article]
Thanks for a good article on two subjects I'm interested in; closed end funds and munis. I'm going to do further research on the ones you listed. I particularly like Nuveen's offerings in general. Anyone use their http://bit.ly/o4ngfR feature?

Discounts to NAV are nice, providing they don't vary significantly up or down from their historical averages. A sudden increase in the discount is a red flag for me.

Unfortunately, stars alone don't don't indicate Morningstar analyst coverage, just retrospective performance. They have to be accompanied by a rating.....neutral, bronze, silver, etc.

I hate it when writers don't separate their paragraphs. Totally unreadable.

They didn't pay enough attention in English Comp. class.

Not too interested in the options strategy, but your articles are interesting and informative nonetheless.

Looks like T did in fact break out to near $56. as of midday today.

    Thanks.

I would agree that a point at/below $55. would be an entry point for BNS.

    Thanks.

The pps is down to around $52.50, includes an increase of some 20 cents today, so do you still consider it a candidate for purchase at this price?

Most analysts are around $56. for fair value.

    Thanks.

  • How The New Money Thinks About Southern Co.  [View article]
Most analysts peg SO fair value at $45 +/-, so everyone's in the ballpark. So the stock is fairly valued and could be considered bondlike at this point, if you think the dividend is safe (payout ratio is upside down TTM, and FCF isn't covering it either).

Why are FE & EXC constantly used as comparisons? Both are chronic underperformers plagued by decades of poor management.
