The Big Temptation For Dividend Investors Right Now [View article]
Chowder,
At first glance, your cherry picked numbers are impressive, if one considers...... 1982--6.27% 1987--5.25% 2011--2.11% to be "bull markets". They looked more like pauses and consolidations to me.
Indeed, from '82-84 you could have as much as doubled (or at least equaled) those gains with money markets and cds with a lot less effort. Ditto '87.
2011--2.11% That's a bull market?
Where are the several years in the early 90's? Seems like you forgot those.
And, why didn't you include the 70's while you were at it, which goes back to the start of my investing time frame? They weren't too stellar, to say the least.
Numbers are a wonderful thing--you can use them to prove any point you wish to make. There are a few flaws and omissions in yours.
We're in the 5th year of a bull market, (if one considers '11 as bullish). The run up is at least partially based on low inflation, printing presses, govt. bond buying, and zero interest rates. It's getting mature and due for a correction, sooner rather than later, IMHO.

Brad,
As always, an thoughtful and insightful article.
I agree with you about the quality of O and the others, too. O (and NNN) would have been great buys--a couple of years ago. But, having missed them then, I'm not going to compound the felony by buying at/near their tops, particularly since I feel that we are entering the mature phase of a 4 year bull market.

I also think that another temptation to avoid is getting involved in what I see as the late stages of this bull rally. To buy in now at either fair or overvalued levels is a prescription for losing money.
As far as stocks currently in my portfolio which are not part of my long term strategy, I currently own AGNC & DX. The reason why can be seen in the activity of the former in the past couple of weeks. A hair trigger is needed for stocks like these when economic developments turn against them.

Yeah, Munger and Buffett are all for dividends, but only for companies they're buying. How long have they been around--since Moses? And income investors are supposed to wait how much longer for a dividend?
I'll listen, study and profit from their pronouncements, but don't think I'll buy their stock anytime soon.

Interesting stock. The upside down payout ratio and the fact that it's so thinly traded (3 month average daily volume is only 10,365) gives pause, however.
On the positive sides are the significant ownership by Fidelity, Royce and Vanguard, as well as the insider activity.

Between NLY & AGNC........
Whose EPS AND dividend has tanked the last year or so?
Nuff said.

Another cogent article, concise also, which is what I like.
Own DX & AGNC . Happy with former, not enjoying the ride down with AGNC too much. Don't want to panic sell, but...............
Resisted a "certain" author's siren song for NLY and glad I did. Double whammy on that one--EPS & dividend have both tanked over the past year.
