The Case For A 100% Dividend Stock Portfolio [View article]
Yeah, Munger and Buffett are all for dividends, but only for companies they're buying. How long have they been around--since Moses? And income investors are supposed to wait how much longer for a dividend?
I'll listen, study and profit from their pronouncements, but don't think I'll buy their stock anytime soon.

Interesting stock. The upside down payout ratio and the fact that it's so thinly traded (3 month average daily volume is only 10,365) gives pause, however.
On the positive sides are the significant ownership by Fidelity, Royce and Vanguard, as well as the insider activity.
The income growth numbers were taken from Morningstar, whose data are usually pretty accurate (unlike their analyses sometimes). It's entirely possible I could have misread it,though.
Yes, the payout ratio was another concern, but many utes are on the high side.
NWN at first glance looks pretty good, but a little research reveals otherwise.
Since they're exclusively natural gas, what's their outlook pricewise, and are they a takeover candidate? What's the regulatory climate like in these Left Coast blue states?
Could you also comment on their lower EPS figures in '12? Also their negative 3 yr. net income growth of -7.3% as opposed to the industry average of +24.8% for the same period?

Scott,
In case you haven't notice before, jonk is a gadfly who comes out of the woodwork with endless nonsensical negative comments on AGNC articles. Conversely, he's one of the head cheerleaders for NLY. A lot of people think that he and an author who relentlessy promotes NLY are one and the same.
Ignore him & he goes away.
Thanks for the article. An eye opener--what I could follow, anyway!

Guess I'll join the chorus. I'm pretty keen on COP for all the reasons above which give the company room to grow, EPSwise, not to mention the nice dividend along the way. Payout ratio nice and low, which I like also.
Kind of like RDS-B, too, even though it's prospects are not as dynamic as COP's. But, reinvigorated management seems poised to rattle a few cages.
The USPS lost $1.9B in Q1 of 2013 as Congress continues to fiddle with the agency burning through cash. The read-through to UPS (UPS +0.3%) and FedEx (FDX -0.4%) from the plight of the USPS is sometimes murky, but in general analysts think that if the USPS continues to raise rates while cutting services it will help maintain the pricing power of the two freight companies. No more of this quasi-privatization a la Amtrak. Both still rely on govt. subsidies (monetary and otherwise) to exist. Anyone who says differently doesn't know what they're talking about.
Do one of two things:
1. Completely privatize it, get the political hacks out, hire professionals and let it sink or swim on it's own. Have UPS and FedEx standing by to pick up the pieces if necessary.
-OR-
2. Bring it back as a 100% government entity with cabinet status once again, with no requirement to be profitable. Service was much better this way in the past anyway.
I opt for #2. Most countries realize that delivering mail is one of the core government responsibilities to it's citizens. Mail service as we know it will never be profitable, especially with the bloated operation it now is.
