  • Ensco Announces Early Termination For ENSCO DS-4, A Drilling Rig Operating In The U.S. Gulf Of Mexico [View article]
These terminations are not all that bad, since in this one case, ESV is getting $160mm or 80% of the contract as a lovely parting gift, as they used to say on the quiz shows.

Now, that's not too shabby, depending on where in the drilling/pumping cycle they are, as ESV is essentially getting paid to do nothing, and certainly not catastrophic as this article wishes to convey. ESV wouldn't be operating their equpment and personnel for free, so they might have come up ok on this one.

  • Income Investing Strategy: Are You A Closet Market Timer? [View article]
Everyone on both sides of this issue have good arguments.

Me, I don't try to "time" the markets, but I try not to buy at the wrong time.

For example, when XYZ stock is heading smartly north, you see many analysts, SA authors, lemming investors and the rest, piling in with buy recommendations, breathlessly favorable articles and euphoric comments.

I've gotten caught up in this whirl myself, and have learned those "great lessons" a couple of times. I never buy at/near a 52 week high, regardless of the company. I'm skeptical of the crowd. I've been around too long, have seen at least 3 great crashes, which has turned me into something of a skeptic and contrarian, I guess.

Being this way I've missed a few, but saved a lot more money overall.

However, the human mind is a wonderful thing...it can rationalize anything, so if the DG investors who pay no attention to cost basis are happy, God bless 'em.

  • Ensco Is Too Volatile For Me Right Now [View article]
    "....too volatile...."

    REALLY!?!?

When did this epiphany occur? Was it since the stock has dropped by ~60%? Or maybe cut the dividend by 80%? Or that the whole O/G sector has tanked?

  • Recent Buy: Realty Income Corporation [View article]
    FerdiS,

Most agree that fair value of O is ~ $44. How are you calculating $53?

While I agree that O is superb company and I own it, buying it at current pps is drastically overpaying.

Prime example of the wisdom of taking many SA authors' advice with a grain of salt.

Higher interest rates should result in higher demand for apartments since mortage interest rates also rise, pricing many out of owning. Landlords then can charge higher rents.

  • UK North Sea workers give overwhelming support for strike ballot, unions say [View news story]
Yeah, cool move on the part of the unions. Wait to strike until company is losing money on every bbl it pumps, and probably wouldn't mind some idling.

Classic strategy by these geniuses running the unions.

  • This REIT Yielding 7.4% Should Benefit Investors When Rates Rise [View article]
This might be the most intelligent discussion on a thread that I've seen in a long time. So intelligent in fact that I had a little trouble following some of it. This then tells me to avoid the investment altogether.

    BTW, where's Brad?

Amazing the economic progress that can be made by sensible business policies. Maybe we'll have something like that in the states post-2016.

Waiting now for the greens to come out of the woodwork.

  • Washington REIT: Ready To Recover With DC? [View article]
Kind of hard to figure out how somebody could screw up D.C. real estate. Especially when you see how long this company's been around. Over the long term, is there any evidence of the govt. shrinking?

I'd have to agree with hongroyield.....this one''s got a flea collar and eats Alpo.

PPS on DX has been pretty static for me, but the dividend more than makes up for it. Some price appreciation would be icing on the cake.
