I find it troubling that "professional" investors find it easy to label money as dumb or smart depending on how recently certain people made money in the market. Before the crash the "smart money" was seemingly still in the market. It was only the crazy ones who shorted and later became famous.
It might make more sense to advise Joe Six Pack to invest conservatively (consistently, with diversification and long term perspective), turn off CNBC and spend more time at his job or with his family. He would be better off than following the advice of the "professionals".
But perhaps stories of volatility and making and losing fortunes makes better reading.

Nice article and good points about many indicators of recovery having weak effects.
But what of the situation in Europe and RoW? The comment re: European housing crisis just beginning is a good one (true with exception of Switzerland). Indeed many effects of the crisis were dampened by European style safety nets that are now coming apart. Will this plunge the U.S. and world markets back to recession as many yankees fear? Does the Euro fail? As a currency expert what's your view?
