I look for opportunities to invest where the expected value is sufficiently greater than the cost to invest and look to invest the appropriate portion of the total funds available. To make a gambling analogy, a highly favorable investment would be one where you could invest $1 on a flip of a coin and receive $10 if it flipped heads and lose only $1 if it came up tails. However, you would not want to invest all of your funds because you would be broke if the coin turned up tails. Thus, the goal is to find investments where the edge is sufficiently large and then invest the appropriate portion of the funds. The Kelly formula provides a theoretical basis for the appropriate percentage of total funds to invest in a single opportunity.
However, in the real world, the precise odds are rarely known. Thus, I seek to develop the ability and obtain the knowledge to calculate the odds with a degree of accuracy, and conservatively enough, to be able to make intelligent invesments.
With regards to equities, which I have primarily invested in, I seek to understand the economics of the business so as to evaluate its potential for long term success or failure. I seek to use this understanding, along with an examination of its financial statements, to determine if the company is undervalued or overvalued. I may then decide to go long undervalued companies and I may decide to short overvalued companies. My preference is to find companies to purchase, rather than to short.

The educational website that supports the trading site is a practical and fundamental base for new traders to obtain an appreciation of both TA and the importance of correctly managing risk. My major at Missouri Western State Univ. was Computer Science. Beginning in 1989 I was the research director of a non-profit clinical research foundation then called Search Alliance. Our research focus included vaccines and antivirals. I subsequently started BioLogic, a consulting firm that focused on partnering emerging biotech’s with large Pharmaceuticals. BioLogic was instrumental in obtaining large pharmaceutical deals for the biotech's we represented. I invest in stocks utilizing every shred of information that technical, fundamental, human, social and internet sciences can provide. The more you know about a companies products, services, customers and investors, the greater your chances of being on the right side of a trade. "There are lots of shortcuts to losing money." Wide Moat Investing (http://widemoatinvesting.wordpress.com/) is a blog written from Charlottesville, Virginia that wants to better understand what makes a good business great, and hopefully uncover some investment opportunities along the way. As Warren Buffett once told his shareholders, “I don’t want an easy business for competitors. I want a business with a moat around it. I want a very valuable castle in the middle and then I want a duke who is in charge of that castle to be very honest and hardworking and able. Then I want a moat around that castle. The moat can be various things: The moat around our auto insurance business, GEICO, is low cost.”At the blog, we will analyze and value businesses particularly by examining their economic "moats." To do so, we will employ a variety of quantitative or qualitative methods, inspired by the methods of successful investors like Warren Buffett, Philip Fisher, Benjamin Graham, Seth Klarman, and Charlie Munger.
Cara Goldenberg is Founding Partner at Permian Investment Partners. Goldenberg got her undergraduate degree in chemistry in 2002 from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Her first job out of college was working as a private-equity analyst at New York-based investment bank Morgan Stanley.
She then moved to Highbridge Capital Management LLC, the hedge- fund firm owned by JPMorgan Chase & Co., in 2003, and to Brahman Capital Corp., also in New York, a year later. She became that firm’s youngest partner, and oversaw a $2 billion European equity portfolio. She and two former Brahman colleagues started Permian with about $65 million in assets in August 2008 and it now manages about $100 million. Permian, which is named for the geologic period that ran from about 290 million to 250 million years ago, focuses on what it deems undervalued companies, mostly in Western Europe.
