  • RIM's Storm is a Washout [View article]
doesn't a bluetooth keyboard defeat the purpose of portability? at that point only a little ways away from a netbook. i know that i certainly would not want to carry around an additional device to serve as input, it seems wasteful.

  • RIM Faces a Critical Month As Apple Gets Tough [View article]
"I read a detailed review of the soon to be released Blackberry Storm (on crackberry.com) and am still shaking my head over that one. Why would anyone buy an iPhone knock-off that's over a year late, has no WiFi, is bulky, has limited applications available, and costs more?"

Maybe because they don't want to be tied to AT&T? I think the iPhone-knockoff comment is a little fanboyish, no? Just b/c something has a touchscreen now it's a knockoff? Nevermind the touchscreen actually provides haptic feedback and the ability to select without clicking...

I've also read detailed reviews and people who used the Storm were very excited and really enjoyed the experience.

And when you talk about software, the main apps I see people use on the iPhone are Google Maps, Facebook, the web browser, and rss readers... Blackberrys do have those. And to be honest, I could care less if my phone plays Super Monkey Ball. RIMM is working on its own App Store as well...

I think the innovation Apple has introduced into the market is beneficial for both companies because it will force them to compete with each other and eventually the consumer will win because of the much improved experience. That's why I own both companies.

I'm just sick and tired of all these people who have never actually held the device in their hands or had any experience with it and they're already bashing or dismissing it.

But me, I'll wait for the Javelin... BB 8900. I love my Curve and can't wait to see if the Javelin will be another winner from RIM

  • Research In Motion: Vulnerable to a Takeover Bid? Part 2 [View article]
Unless the situation at RIMM really deteriorates to a state of disrepair I don't see how MSFT would get a majority of shareholders to agree to the deal unless they offered $80/share at least. They couldn't even get YHOO to agree to a deal. Imagine if some company came in now and offered $115 for POT? They'd be laughed at. RIMM is trading at Fwd P/E of less than 14 right now while still producing a product with extremely high profit margins. They missed by a PENNY and got obliterated b/c their margins are going to shrink 3%?.

Where's the synergy anyway? You're talking about two wholly disparate smartphone platforms in BB OS and Windows Mobile. Integrating those seems like a logistical nightmare. Would MSFT just keep two separate platforms and sell Blackberrys and Treos?

I mean I understand its a rough market but it's not like RIMM is knocking on death's door here. They aren't desperate for a buyer, they've got the Storm coming out soon, they've got the successor to the Curve coming out sometime in Q4 of this year... They're maintaining their enterprise and business market while expanding into the consumer space. Smartphones are replacing regular phones as people realize they can have things like small devices with full or near-full keyboards, brilliant screens, WiFi, GPS, etc.

RIMM and AAPL are the leaders in the smartphone market for a reason, and they'll both continue to stay that way for the foreseeable future.

  • Research in Motion Pays Up for Growth [View article]
84c this Q vs 39c same Q last year. I wonder how many times before earnings the estimates were raised? My favorite quote: “the number of technology stocks with over $1 billion in quarterly sales that are growing in the triple digits is one.”

I think the future is still very bright for both RIMM and AAPL.

@Apple Heavy... if you're referring to the guy that said "ass," grow up. In reverence to George Carlin, I do need to point out that ass isn't one of the 7 words. =)

And using words like "RIMM fanatics" in the same breath when your username is Apple Heavy just goes to show what side you're clearly on. Both AAPL and RIMM have made me a good amount of money so badmouthing either one of them is just pointless to me. Both the iPhone and the BB are great platforms with the potential to expand without cannibalizing each others sales. People with "dumbphones" are going to upgrade to smart phones and they want choice. But why are you even throwing HTC into the mix, honestly? They run WinMo software which I have yet to see very many people like all that much.

  • Research in Motion Rallying Ahead of Earnings  [View article]
"Research in Motion (RIMM) and Apple (APPL) seem to be dominating the handset space as both companies are at 52 week highs today"

RIMM yes, AAPL no. AAPLs 52 week high is over 200. The stock is currently in the 180s.

I think RIMM might touch $150 going into earnings. If it does, I'll probably pare down my position some. I'm a little scared going into earnings this quarter. Especially with the Fed decision coming too.

  • Research In Motion vs. Apple: The Smartphone Showdown [View article]
RIMMs touchscreen model isn't a "rumor". It's the Blackberry Thunder and it's a CDMA phone that will be available on Verizon in Q3.

The Blackberry Bold is the first 9000 series phone from RIMM and will support HSDPA on AT&Ts network. It will be available sometime this month if I remember right. The Blackberry Javelin is similar in form and function to the Bold but is not 3G and has an upgraded camera. This phone is supposed to for T-Mo. The Bold "may" come to T-Mo considering they're talking about finally rolling out their 3G network to a wider audience.

Also the Blackberry Kickstart (I think that's the name) is the first Blackberry flip phone and will be released sometime in Q3 I believe.

Websites like BGR, BBCool, Crackberry, etc have covered these details for a while now.

  • Research In Motion: Expectations Running High [View article]
I think one of the major issues with the iPhone is that you're tied to AT&T. Lots of people don't like the idea of being tied a carrier no matter how cool their phones are. Back when they were Cingular I had some pretty crappy customer service experiences with them and promised myself I wouldn't give them my money anymore. I switched to T-Mo, their customer service is great, coverage is pretty good, and even with my Blackberry plan my minutes are still cheaper than a standard plan from AT&T. A phone that loads the national geographic website in 19 seconds, no matter how slick, isn't enough to convince me to go back to them.

  • UBS: Research In Motion Plans to Launch Four New BlackBerries this Year [View article]
"Business users want iPod features, iTunes store, and will want iPhone apps as they appear before the 'bold' even ships. "

Business users get what the businesses they work for give them. Why, if I'm in charge of setting up a communications network for 20,000 employees do I care if the device has access to the iTunes store? There are certainly great features on the iPhone that are very cool like the touchscreen and then which-way-am-I-holding... orientation adjustment. But compared to a tactile, wait excuse me - "geeky 80s style" keyboard, most users are more efficient using something that gives responsive feedback.

I'm not bashing the iPhone, it's a great device and as an AAPL long its helped give me some pretty decent returns. However the fan boy frenzy and foaming-at-the-mouth zealotry of some Apple fanatics is simply blinding you to the fact that you're missing out on a company that produces a great product that is widely adopted by both business and consumers. Your failure to realize that the smart phone market growth is by taking market share from simpler phones rather than cannibalizing its own sub-sector is keeping you on the sidelines as a company like RIMM hits all-time highs.

So keep up the good work buying Apple products and making me money. And hell, keep talking bad about everything tech that isn't Apple... while missing out on the ride.

  • RBC Analyst: RIM Can Withstand Smartphone Competition [View article]
Smartphones are an expanding, not contracting marketplace. there's room for AAPL and RIMM to grow. Calling RIMM a one-trick pony is a bit short-sighted considering they've got the enterprise market eating out of the palm (no pun intended) of their hand, and the pearl and curve and forthcoming 9000-series are expanding their reach in the consumer market.

And RIMM isn't walking around saying "iPhone-killer"... that's analysts and reviewers trying to rev up the hype machine. AAPL and RIMM are two solid companies that have given me solid gains over the past couple months. And ppl predicting RIMM's demise... short the stock and put your money where your mouth is.

Ok, here's the problem... first off none of these are really "facts" they're observations...
    1. RIM sold only 2.2 times as many phones as Apple, a company that had never sold a phone before.
--Is this is a quarter or over the life of the iPhone so far? To reverse your logic, a new phone with tons of hype from one of the best branded companies in the world failed to outsell a phone manufacturer that supposedly "overestimated its ability to connect to its customers" and "has spread itself to thin."

    2. RIM sold through 325 carriers, Apple through very few
--Uh, whoopity doo. This may very well be a "fact" but your rants and raves (maybe you should post on craigslist!) don't really show the relevance. Is this supposed to tie into the previous post and say tell us that AAPL outsells RIMM on the carriers that AAPL has agreed to supply with iPhones? Maybe that's because those ARE the only carriers that you can get an iPhone on... hmm.

    3. RIM has overestimated its ability to connect with consumers.
You need a great mouse trap to make consumer stick to a device for the future and iTunes & Video Download service is the magic key
--This is absolutely not a fact, it's pure conjecture and if you believe it's a fact then you're delusional. The business world is still RIMMs and Apple's iPhone SDK and ActiveSync isn't going to convince a company that already purchased 50,000 BlackBerrys to dump them in the trash and tie themselves to AT&T. It's simply not going to happen on any wide scale. Small shops that are just getting started or can afford to scrap a few BBs, maybe.

    4. RIM has spread itself too thin with Push Email and SMS and Browsing interface stinks.
--RIMM has allowed all types of software to be developed for their phone for a long time and no one is stuck using the web browser. Push email was RIMMs cup of tea, how did they spread themselves too thin with that? And what does SMS have to do with it? RIMM didn't develop text messaging.

For the record, I'm long AAPL and RIMM. I want them both to succeed and I think they will both continue to for the foreseeable future. You apparently didn't like your BlackBerry or you've got a big short position in RIMM because you dump on them like no one's business.

The thing is your mindless rants and your copies of obscure "Reuters" articles don't impress anyone. They just take up space on the page and you look like a comment troll. So add something meaningful to the conversation or go find a yahoo board to spam.

    "Can you challenge these facts

India news Blackout by RIMM management and Media crooks under the RIMM ticker feed.....?? "

No I certainly can't because they aren't FACTS, they're the deranged rantings of a mad man who chooses to flood posts with comments that are 10x as long as the original article. Go set up a blog and beg for people to read it instead of flooding this site with copied & pasted articles and overly-biased rants.

The idea of giving up a laptop for one an iPhone makes sense for some people, but those people probably didn't really need laptops in the first place. If someone had a laptop because they needed to read email in the airport, then yeah, you could swap out the laptop for a smart phone. But until you can plug peripherals into the iPhone and somehow magically give it 15" screen, laptops will still be an essential component of business mobility.

    BTW------------
Ken Singh = SPAM... this guy is on every AAPL or RIMM post he can find copying & pasting conspiracy theory nonsense. Go put on your tinfoil hat and unplug your computer, weirdo.

Why is the share price falling on RIMM? If memory serves me correctly the stock is up from the recent lows in the mid-80s. And if you're going to tell me that it's still off it's 52 week high, well then I'd dare you to pick 10 stocks randomly and show me 9 that aren't off their 52 week high.
