Protected Principal Retirement Strategy: The Quest For Perfection [View article]
Ralph, just did a quick check on MIN dividend. Looks like it has been declining (from 0.050 to 0.044) over the last 5 years. What has caused that & will it continue. Thanks for the article & I'll look further into MIN.
Re NTI: I had the unfortunate luck to purchase this (@ 25.47) about 35 min. before the owners announced a sale of about 10% of their interest. I bought 113% more shares the next day @ 24.38 and told my wife that if it was a buy @ 25.47, then it's a steal @ 24.38. As it continued to fall I asked her if we should buy more (she had read one of the SA articles about it): "NO!!" was her reply. Now that it closed Fri. at 25.84 she's having 2nd thoughts.
Found out recently that NTI has a bakery.
Relatively cheap Bakken (& CDN) oil via pipeline (17% ownership) to their refinery. Gasoline from their refinery to their gas station / convenience stores, which are also supplied by their bakery. Nice setup, and wouldn't be surprised if they buy a farm to supply their shops with produce & dairy products.
Are Electronic Cigarettes The New Growth Market For Big Tobacco? [View article]
Thanks for this interesting and informative article (long MO & PM).
I've tried the "eluma" brand electronic cigarettes. Spent over a $100 on a package of cartridges and accessories, with different favors and strengths, but all gave me a severe cough. Others have told me the same thing, and they have gone back to tobacco, as have I. I initially liked the idea, since nicotine doesn't cause cancer, and you have the opportunity to gradually reduce the dosage, but couldn't handle the cough.
Also some places have banned electronic cigarettes, though their reasons are weak, and probably wouldn't stand up in court.
AT&T (T) -1.4% AH after disclosing its expects to record a $10B non-cash charge for Q4 related to pension/benefit plan losses. A $12B actuarial loss produced by a lower assumed discount rate is partly offset by a $1.9B asset gain. In October, the telco asked the Department of Labor to let it use $9.5B in preferred equity interest to help cover a pension shortfall that had reached $10.2B at the end of 2011. [View news story]

"thinly traded" is an understatement.
I don't think Schwab lets me trade on the Toronto Stock Exchange, so I'm stuck with the pink sheet.
