The Rebalancing Of The U.S. Coal And Natural Gas Industry [View article]
So, Mark and Paulo...fun debate, fellas. Am I to infer that what you are both saying in a roundabout way, is to buy the distribution of both coal and NG (rails, pipelines, etc.)?
As a value investor, I am watching coal and steel stocks as I feel strongly that there is decent money to be made - and in relatively short order. (I have already made a nice sum in an earlier MT trade and will buy again at 16-16.5) I am also a FTEK shareholder (a small cap tech co) that plays off the bigger energy concern inherent here, which is air quality. Sure, I am presently getting beat down in FTEK as (downward) spiraling coal/ng price action tornadoes through the media channels. But this is short term noise. My hedge: bulking up my EXC position at current prices will pay me long term, as baseload fossil fuels currently being discussed will recover in price and per megawatt costs will dictate who wins again...it will just take a while (24 mos max?) for the EXC trade to pay off re capital gains. While I wait, I will collect the pretty fat divvie that is offered. AND take capital gains on beaten down coal and steel stocks, whose winnings will fund more defensive holdings.
Thanks for the continued good work in your articles. Cheers, Moses
144502, in a word 'yes'. if I had an existing postion in bonds it would be a very short ladder. The chances of me opening a position in bonds is real close to zero at this juncture.
DVK, I learned from you guys. Mr.Fish, D4L, Mr.Tweed, Mr.Carnevale, and your solid followers are a great group to learn from; can't thank you all enough. I will bite on your Gross retort...what do you think their moves through 2011 signify? Don't read too much into my 'boring' reference, as its tongue-in-cheek! Friends questioned my equity choices in the past; I smile and collect my growing dividends. Regards, Moses
$A, thank you for the article. Mostserene, thank you for offering your insight. Agree with the EXC call, PapaAl as we trough in 2012-13 re electricity pricing. I hold no bonds (40 yrs old) as I feel relatively confident that I will beat fixed asset returns by adroitly buying EXC among some other strong dividend names and holding for long periods. I believe strongly that Bill Gross was correct, just early. Bonds are not my cup of tea, when quality dividend payers are still relatively affordable and there is still a decent chance for a QE IV and QE V. Cheers, Moses. Long other boring names like ABT PG SYY NVS SYK PAYX.
ArcelorMittal May Double In Value, Outperforming U.S. Steel [View article]
Hey all, sorry I am so late to the string. I consider myself a value investor and found MT too hard to pass up @$15. I got back out at just north of $23 as I thought the trade was a bit wrung and BAM- I'm a momentum guy. Or just lucky...Armageddon is priced in to this stock and when it heads back down further in the teens and stays there, I am going in again. Dr. V, if things are as dire as you posit, will MT becomess an acquisition target? Cheers, Moses
Stryker Corporation: Strong Company With Compelling Valuation [View article]
Dan, thanks for providing this kind of detailed analysis on one of my favorite companies. Glad to see you have skin in the game. I got in at $40 and again at $50. I thought we may see SYK touch $45 with the volatility of late, so I am rooting for a downdraft. Again, thank you for the analysis. Long SYK ABT NVS. I considered buying JNJ, but followed my instincts in 2009 and coupled NVS with SYK. Cheers, Moses
How to Play Nuclear Energy's Implosion? Buy It [View article]
Dividend Player, thank you for interjecting some balance into an energy topic that is being swayed by a narrowly focused media set. Let me be clear: Human life is precious, however the externalities involved with cooking fossil fuels for electric production seem to fall through the cracks in this debate. How many ozone non-attainment days do Americans slog through, not caring about the levels of pollutants in the air they breathe? How many coal, Nat gas, and hydro accidents occur every year that go unreported? Ultimately, we all live richer, fuller lives because of electricity. I personally believe that nuclear power is a necessary generation source to keep America competitive in the face of increasingly expensive solid and liquid hydrocarbons. Nat gas will be a transitionary source for base load as cheap coal gets priced up due to increasingly stringent emissions standards and growing export demand. Long EXC

Thanks for the solid read, Matthew. I am about 80% in cash in my 401/457 if that tells you anything about where I think we are in the macro picture.
I was curious what you thought of steel, coal, and uranium at this juncture? In my equities book, I bought ACI, BTU, MT, and a speculative bet on URZ. MT is my largest position. I guess I have already diversified as I thought valuations on the above were solid.
Is Now The Time To Buy ArcelorMittal? [View article]
Kevin, thanks for the solid article. I am with Vireo - I thought I was fully loaded to, but if it hangs around 12 long enough for me to find new cash, my position will grow.

RE Healthcare: We didnt "control" most bugs until a few decades ago, bugs that killed millions and millions of people...I could quote from Ivan Ilich's seminal work from the early 1970s entitled "Tools For Conviviality" on my knowledge of "healthcare" and how it relates to technological advances in modern times, but I dont know if that would convince you that I know anything about anything.
PS. I did not go to medical school, but I did invest in ACI and BTU as they seemed like reasonably cheap companies whose stocks will rise over the next 12-24 months.

@flyingby...agreed. Geopolitical risk is the only item that made me a little leery, but I am willing to take that on...
Run, TEVA, run!
