Who could have predicted this approach from Chris Dodd? For once there is a proposal that could actually provide comprehensive oversight to the broken banking system, letting the Fed go back to managing monetary policy and the FDIC go back to insuring deposits. Devastatingly clear in its simplicity - at least on the surface. Where will the legislative support come from?

There are lots of competitors in the on-line selling business, but no real competitors in on-line payment where scale is critical. Can you imagine VISA, Mastercard, or AmEx as a monopoly?

How can the EU be predicting 7.5% budget deficits when the Euro Zone target is a maximum of 3%? But then, we're pushing 10% - Obama has gotten us to be more European than the French!

In re John Galt Motors (F). A free management, better design, better safety, better technology, better marketing will beat the UAW and government subsidies for GMAC in the long run. This isn't a matter of economics - it is a stock (and a set of wheels) to be purchased for philosophical reasons. Lets hope that Ayn Rand was right.

The John Galt v The Government contest goes on: - Ford by far the top American company in quality; - GM sells factory in Joe Biden's Delaware to a start-up selling $40 -80,000 electric cars; - Feds give another several billion to GMAC to help them survive in financing purchases of GM and Chrysler cars and dealers; - UAW votes to turn down contract with Ford which mirrors GM/Chrysler contracts; - Ford in a deal to sell Volvo to a Chinese company, with no government involvement. I sure hope that Ayn rand was right about who wins.

As far down the road as economists can see, it is 1-3% GDP growth and 10% unemployment. After that, it is a question of economic religion - will America's ability to reinvent itself emerge, or will the decline that is evident today continue and accelerate? We are trying to add another $ trillion to our healthcare cost, and to make our energy production less efficient.
Somehow the health care debate has become about insurance companies - and I agree that their future profitability is questionable. But there will be no improvement in the overall cost to America until we align the decision about what procedure/medication to buy with the person paying the bill. Neither company-paid nor government-paid insurance does that.

Don't blame our decline on China. If we want to consume more than we produce, there is always somebody willing to make stuff and sell it to us on credit. Until we run out of credit.

Control of executive pay is a complex subject, of obvious populist attraction as a reaction to the abuses on Wall Street and in concert with the rapidly growing reach of government. Companies that the government owns - OK; companies that pose a systemic risk - why not Glass-Steagul or some other free market answer; companies that are just obscenely profitable; what about individuals? Why banks and not A-Rod, Steven Speilberg, or George Soros? But then, this is change that we can believe in.

If there are two or three heroes/heroines in the government in the Wall Street mess, Sheila Bair is one of them. Maybe if they ever get around to reform of the financial system, they'll listen to her.

It's good to see the bonuses at goldman. When we get serious about fixing our fiscal imbalances, we'll know where to go - and there will be zero friends.
