    Lots of political nihilism for just a week before the messiah takes over. I would note that over 90% of incumbents in congress were reelected despite an approval rating for the institution of less than 15%. At least the 8 year drumbeat of NYT criticism of President Bush will shortly be over .

    How can the rating agencies not downgrade GE? More of a comment on S&P, Moody's, and Fitch than on GE. This is the least mentioned of the regulatory problems, but one of the most serious.

    Not much edification here today. In the polls, 70% think that congress needs to act quickly; 30% think this Paulson plan is the right answer. Too bad it happens in the heat of a divisive campaign. McCain wants to help solve the problem, but there is no way that the Democrats will allow him to be seen as a deal-maker. On the other hand, Obama is getting political advantage by voting present, and occasionally ridiculing McCain's efforts. An era is over.

    In business, once you have played all of your cards of maximizing efficiency and optimizing products and marketing, the final thing that one can do to increase returns is to increase risk. It certainly seems as if this is the point where the Fed is treading these days. The moves to date have been creative and, it would seem, effective; however, safeguards are being whittled down one at a time. they are there for reasons that have not gone away.
