    Who could have predicted this approach from Chris Dodd? For once there is a proposal that could actually provide comprehensive oversight to the broken banking system, letting the Fed go back to managing monetary policy and the FDIC go back to insuring deposits. Devastatingly clear in its simplicity - at least on the surface. Where will the legislative support come from?

    Good to lead with the Intel antitrust case, and the later article about the Justice Department gearing up. While it has received no attention, it would be surprising if the Obama administration did not do more on anti-trust - which has had the sleep alarm on since Bobby Kennedy. This may well be a lower key companion to financial re-regulation. Probably for the better.

    From a historical perspective, I worked for Pabst Brewing in the 70's. We (#4) were blocked from buying Heileman (#5) because it would violate the Herfendahl Index of market concentration. Today InBev buys Budweiser, Coors and Miller combine - no problem.

    Where is the plan? Obama assembled all of the greatest financial minds and came up with what? Priority One for the Bush administration was stabilizing the financial system after the collapse of Lehman. The first $350 billion of the TARP did a pretty good job of that - albeit by direct infusion of capital rather than by the advertised plan for purchase of toxic assets. So the Obama team has focused on huge spending plans without any apparent plan for the financial system - continue the piecemeal bailout of AIG; continue to discuss some method of buying the toxic assets; continue the drip-drip entry into the auto industry.
    The markets want to know what will happen. Bad news is better than no news.
