Who could have predicted this approach from Chris Dodd? For once there is a proposal that could actually provide comprehensive oversight to the broken banking system, letting the Fed go back to managing monetary policy and the FDIC go back to insuring deposits. Devastatingly clear in its simplicity - at least on the surface. Where will the legislative support come from?

If China wants TIPS (and the Fed issues only a relatively small number of them) , what do you suppose that we should be buying?

CNI also is the consensus best operator in the North American railroad industry - best work rules; best network; best scheduling practices. In addition to the East-West route, they own the former Illinois Central Gulf Railroad and have bought a number of feeder lines in the upper midwest. They are also active in West Coast Canadian ports, providing and alternative to the high cost US ports. The downside is exposure to the basic materials and agricultural-based Canadian economy, but "this too shall pass."

Where did this insurance industry thing come from? I thought that the AIG problem was swaps, and the systemic risk - which incidentally were covered at 100 cents on the dollar for domestic or international holders. But that's not the problem here. And from all reporting, AIG's real businesses (insurance; annuities) are doing fine. Did Geithner just see another hill to climb?

Interesting testimony in the Congressional hearings - particularly the rating agencies whose credibility is completely gone, and Greenspan who is being aggressively challenged by Waxman and others for his deregulation mantra - about Enron as well as the current mess. Maybe they will come up with something prospective.

Much comes down to people. We are fortunate that Paulson and Bernanke know what they are doing, are creative, and have a pragmatic (and selective) priority of stabilizing the financial system. Cox and the SEC seem to finally be coming to the party - controlling short sellers.
It is also interesting to see the first instincts of the presidential candidates:
    - McCain to call for a comprehensive, non-partisan review of the financial system once things have been stabilized.
    - Obama to make political hay by blaming the Republicans and ridiculing McCain's call, and touting his own leadership without any specifics.

    A comment for Ms Lieberman:
It is unfortunate that you move in such limited circles of Republicans. I would adjust your economic comment to say that, in general, Republicans represent the creators of wealth in the country, while Democrats are more interested in the social justice of how it is distributed - a worthy goal, but one must create the wealth in the first place. As a second general characteristic, Republicans believe that individuals can do a better job of creating opportunity and protecting individual liberty than the government can.

If you were to study one industry in business school, it should be the airline industry - many competitors, aggressive consumer marketing, high interest by the financial press, high legacy costs, volatile factors beyond your control, regulation, etc.
As an investor, I cannot imagine a worse place to go than a major airline. Have been intrigued by the buzz around a start-up once. But never again.
