  • Google continues robot M&A spree by acquiring Boston Dynamics [View news story]
    heyo: Funny. ;)

This is not inconsistent with the goals of either company.

The Google self-driving car is essentially a big land drone, and AMZN is exploring robotic package delivery.

I'm a little bemused by the acquistion choice given the present tension between Google and the U.S. security agencies.

There are however plenty of civilian uses for rough terrain robots - search and rescue for stranded hikers, for instance - and Google's work with cognitive emulation should give it an advantage.

Dosing would be riskier than injection how?

Presumably children with Type One don't control their own meds, for adults it shouldn't create an increased problem, unless you see some factor I don't?

I'd like to know what you were drinking, Q. ;)

Personally I'd be going put-call spreads on this, if I took a position, which I wouldn't. But I admire your courage. Keep us updated on this trade.

  • Timing Tesla's Bounce [View article]
This comment is a bit confused. Tesla, SpaceX, Solar City are all separate companies. The profitability of one is no guarantee of profitability in another. What they have in common is Elon, not balance sheets.

I have to agree on the stock symbols.

How fast can I find the information I need right now, today? Not by reading the full company name + headline.

Those of us who trade actively or even just follow one stock avidly have the symbols on our lists memorized; and having the symbol in the headline helps in learning new ones.

  • Restaurant franchisees are hiring more and it could have more to do with the Affordable Care Act than actual demand, according to analysts. Under the fine print of the health care reform bill, a business can avoid paying health care insurance if their employees on average work less than 30 hours a week. Is an army of part-time workers about to invade the restaurant business (CAKE, CBRL, CMG, DNKN, DPZ, DRI, EAT, JACK, MCD, PNRA, RRGB, RT, SONC, WEN, BWLD, THI, BDL, NATH, BKW, PZZA, TXRH, DENN, KKD, BBRG, DFRG, BOBE, RUTH, IRG, DIN) to help allay ACA costs? [View news story]
It's increasingly clear that the response of business to this "yes we can" legislation is going to be "no, we won't".

Converting full-time jobs to part-time reduces the pool of insured persons paying premiums, which is the money that will be paid out in claims. Meanwhile Aetna is scaling back on writing policies for individuals.

Health care affordability is a moving target. It's not too soon to start asking how the government is going to be keeping tabs on how all this insurance is going to get paid for.

  • Facebook (FB) accidentally shared the phone numbers and email addresses of 6M users to unauthorized viewers over the past year via the Download Your Information tool, although the company's now fixed the bug that caused the problem. What appears to be sparking more anger than the leak is Facebook's admission that it has been creating "shadow profiles" on members by collecting information about them without their permission. The leak occurred because data from shadow and actual profiles were inadvertently merged. (FB blog[View news story]
Looks like it is Facebook trying to make a mountain from a molehill...of data.

The unanswered question here is, why? To sell it to someone? Who?

  • How To Build A Generation 3 Tesla [View article]
    It's something to think about.

I was thinking the other day that they haven't made any plans to get into the motorcycle end of the market, either. Motorcycles might make good use of those smaller batteries - less chassis to lug around. Though the damage risk to the battery in a crash might be higher.

  • Google (GOOG +0.1%) steps up its challenge to Yelp (YELP +2.3%) by showing an interactive "carousel" of businesses when PC searches are made for local info. The update follows the launch of a carousel for tablet users in December, and the January addition of Zagat listings to the Google Places API. Meanwhile, CLSA has raised its PT for Google to $1,100, even though Q2 data from search marketing firm Performics has been mixed, with Y/Y spending growth falling to 4.5% from 12.4% thanks partly to tough comps. Mobile now makes up 36% of Performics' tracked U.S. paid clicks, but only 13.5% of ad spend, due to lower prices. CLSA is confident Enhanced Campaigns will help narrow the gap. [View news story]
