  • The Biggest Problem For BBRY, Too Much Competition

Let me start by saying this, I like what Blackberry has done with the Z10. I have been hands on with the device and it's not bad, it is a big step forward for the company. There is a problem for BBRY, the Z10, and its BB10 OS though, the game has significantly changed. The manic days of smartphone releases are over, there are just too many really, really good smartphones out there.

BBRY bulls who think there is going to be a ground swell movement to the Z10 reminiscent of old iPhone days are deluding themselves. BBRY is not re-inventing the game, like Apple did, they are basically just trying to catch up.

So what am I getting at? Well, sure BB10 and the Z10 may be the newest thing right now, but it's going to be short lived...let me show you:

    Samsung Galaxy S4

    Motorola X Phone

    Apple iPhone 5S

    Sony Experia Z

    Microsoft Surface Phone

    HTC One

    Nokia EOS (Lumia 1000)

    Huawei Ascend Mate

    LG Optimus G Pro

All these phones will come out in 2013, they will all be very, very good devices, and they will all be competing for the same market share, with each other and with the BBRY Z10. So yes, the Z10 has hype right now, but can it last long enough to change BBRY's fortunes? Can the Z10 and BB10 be hot long enough to turn the company around? Right now nobody knows, but most have already made their bets. Time will tell.

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, and no plans to initiate any positions within the next 72 hours.

  • BBRY Z10 Demand Has Been Greatly Exaggerated

We have all heard the rumors of the BBRY Z10 selling out in the UK and in Canada. I am a Canadian citizen living on the west coast and was there to check out the hype...the line ups, the unruly mobs...wait, what hype?

I have checked out 4 different carriers in my area since the release of the Z10 on February 5 and none of them have sold out, as a matter of fact demand seems muted. Did you know that some of the most popular wireless carriers in places like downtown Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary were only shipped a very limited supply of Z10's, we're talking 25 to 30 units for the launch day. I believe it was a strategy of BBRY's to have only very limited supply available in order to fabricate a 'sell out' situation.

Of the 4 stores I visited, one had been shipped a total of 3 units and had sold 1 as of the first day, another had sold 4 units as of today (Feb. 6) and another had not sold any units at all as of today. At one of the stores I visited the sales rep reported to me that the first 2 Z10's they un-boxed were both defective! One had an unresponsive touch screen and another had undisclosed problems with the software.

Now I did get the chance to play around with the phone for a considerable amount of time and I do have to say that I believe it to be a nice piece of hardware. The keyboard is nice, as has been reported, and the software seemed fine. The display is actually very nice as well. All in all a good device, but the problem is that nothing is outstanding. In all honestly it is not the quantum leap that BBRY needed, but it might just be enough to hang in for a very distant third place.

Also now we have a rumor of the Samsung Galaxy S4 being unveiled on March 15, 2013. What does this mean for the Z10? I guess we will all know soon enough!

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, but may initiate a long position in BBRY over the next 72 hours.

  • Sell RIMM Now And Buy AAPL.

It's crazy, everyone in suddenly a diehard RIMM bull. It would seem to me that these are the same diehard AAPL bulls of just three months ago. You know, three months ago right as AAPL was reaching its new all time highs, and peak. Three months ago when RIM was hated with a passion by all. It just seems that the irrational exuberance in the RIM story is getting out of hand. All the sudden people who have never even tested a BB10 device are claiming that it blows iOS out of the water. This getting crazy people. Now I do like the RIM story and I do like the looks and specs of the new Blackberry Z10 phone, but I think this is a little too much, too fast.

I would sell RIMM now and buy AAPL. I think AAPL has a good chance of beating consensus on Jan. 23/13. Now I also think RIMM will crater on the Jan. 30/13 launch of BB10, as traders 'sell the news'. This would then present a great opportunity to sell AAPL and get back into RIMM.

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, but may initiate a long position in RIMM, AAPL over the next 72 hours.
