A regression Rsquared of .15 would usually be interpreted as meaning the regression is not statistically significant. In other words, there is no correlation.

  • Boulder Total Return: Get Berkshire Hathaway At A 20% Discount Through This Closed End Fund [View article]
I'm not an accountant but, the annual report makes me think that more than half of the NAV is unrealized capital gain. The tax consequences of this might help to explain the persistent discount.

  • Wal-Mart: How To Play Weak Consumer Spending [View article]
I don't know how the author does his research. If he visits my neighborhood, he'll find Walmart shelves so poorly stocked that you can't find what you want. Your sales are likely to decline if there's nothing to buy. When my frustration reached the boiling point, I sold my stock.

Ian, I think your analysis is good as a growth story. That may be all we need to care about, now. But certification eventually becomes a competitive business.

Consider Underwriters Lab in electrical equipment. Or, AGA Labs (now part of CSA) in gas appliances. Both had a monopoly position, but no more. It's all price and schedule. I know because I live in that world.

Interesting. Sounds like they have a good start. The one thing is that, it's fairly easy for competitors to enter the 3rd party verification market. Just ask my former employer what happened when the customers found out they could get the certification cheaper from the new guy.

They have very little undistributed income. They're one hiccup away from having trouble making their dividend.
