  • J.C. Penney: Estimating How It Performed In November And During Black Friday Weekend  [View article]
It was a very busy, busy weekend. If things aren't piled up and thrown around on blackthursday/Friday then something's wrong.

GMom we are having the same experience at our store, lots of compliments, lots of customers and sales increases, much better than the previous year. I feel that we are also understaffed and although we have many new holiday hires we are still looking for more! It's a busy and exciting time! Find more is so greatly improved, from availability of product to speedier delivery so that can only help us.

The store I work in has been having consistent gains. We are busier even in home(finally). I feel optimistic about the Christmas season. I think we are going to be far busier than last year. This is typically a very slow time of year and it isn't nearly as slow as I remember last year.

Clearance is a big seller but we have some pretty pricey stuff to move out.

  • J.C. Penney May Have To Stage An Expensive Comeback  [View article]
I anticipate a huge home clearance sale this Holiday season.

Hopefully there will be new home merchandise that is more traditional for the core customer. And some very traditional Christmas decorations and free snow globes and a midnight black Friday opening and whatever else.

I hope that either Jonathan Adler or Michael Graves and Martha Stewart Celebrations are remerchandised as the Christmas area.

Appealing gifts that people can afford that recipients need and want.

As far as current clearance, I believe there is less clearance this year than last. The stockroom is not bursting at the seams with men's and women's, no home clearance to speak of, but a lot of children's clearance. I don't know if this is more costly clearance but the price point on it now is not as low. Last year there were tons of $1 items, this year not so much.

I have been working in childrens and it is back to school and tax free so I have been really busy. We are busier than we have been in a long time but I am not sure we are making our goals everyday And I am not sure if our goals are last years numbers or something else.

Traffic is up compared to the rest of our summer which is a busy time for us usually. Home is down. As Gmom says windows does pretty well but the rest is way down. The other divisions are posting some gains. It is just the beginning of back to school so hopefully we will continue to have gains.

I like the seating a lot and we also have a lot of elderly and they do appreciate it. The design area in windows, the kitchen bar with seating and the service desk as well as our in aisle furniture are happy resting places. Wish the service bars were a little more ergonomicly designed andi am looking forward to having directional signage that is accurate.

I still get folks who want the old penneys and I had a lady refuse to be checked out on the Libby but she was the only one. But lots of positive comments. The second most common negative comment I get is having to go to different areas to compare similar items, bedding, sheets and towels, etc. the common complaint I hear that it is hard to find a place to pay.

Gmom, you can't access any credit functions at the service bar. However you can order made to measure blinds there, lol... It has the made to measure system but not credit. Surely that will change. We Take a Libby to the service desk for credit aps and then move to an old fashioned register to print new account info.

i am pretty sure you have not visited our store but would love to have you. I am so proud of the work we as a team have done but still more can be done to make it easier for our customers. it is still a little challenging for them to pay for things they want which is the most important and basic part of retail. but we are headed in the right direction.

Seth, I would rather not state publicly where my store is since I work there. I love so many of the changes but pricing and signing need some work and the service bar is poorly designed as a checkout which is what it is what it will be used for. Our customers are so happy to have a place at the back of the store that is manned.

I agree with gmoms thoughts on core standards. Things are too full there are pregnant racks. And we sometimes lack adequate staff to really maintain core standards.

At least the Libby's are better now. Ours sometimes disconnect from store wifi and login to public wifi and we still have some dead spots, but greatly improved. With more registers and printers it is easier to print a receipt for the customer with the Libby that is close by. The online ordering ap on the Libby performs well and being able to access merchandise tools is a big plus.

Today a customer brought me a swimsuit separate to buy. It was priced $30. It rang up on sale for 32.70. It was on a rack signed 19.99, incorrectly placed. It's correct rack was signed for the piece to be $27. The signage was from last week, in fact the whole swimsuit area was signed incorrectly. Pricing and signing is very inconsistent now in many areas. All merchandise that arrives from the warehouse has to be checked for pricing. All merchandise that is in the stockroom has to be checked and rechecked. And signing packages arrive incomplete. Pricing and signing are still in flux...

  • J.C. Penney: The Conclusive Variable Points Up  [View article]
I can tell you how I handle this transaction. I carry a bag with my mobile device and a few bags and a radio. I take my customer to a place where I can take her merchandise and ring it up, say a fixture like a bed or shelving or a table, whatever is handy. I ring it upon the mobile and bag it, hoping there is no buffering. That way her hands are free and she has a place to sit her bag down to go through it to get her method of payment(gift card, debit, credit) . At the end of the transaction I determine what type of receipt she wants, generally printed it preferred by customers and select the most convenient register to print her receipt which I get for my customer. Mobile is great for say 10 or less items as long as the connection holds up. The more the items the more challenging the transaction.

  • J.C. Penney: We Don't Envy Ullman's Position  [View article]
I think if more items sell at the promotional prices and lots fewer sell at really really cheap clearance prices then margins should improve. I have never seen such inexpensive clearance merchandise as at Penneys this past year. Most especially if volume improves.

  • Is J.C. Penney Beyond Help?  [View article]
I order fairly often and I see some improvements in the last month in functionality. For a long time I could only order on my pc, not ipad or iphone and sometimes .com would would tell me everything was not available or when searching for an item at a particular store that there were no stores even though I knew there were.

Now they need to speed delivery times up. And if .com cancels an order an email would be nice. Perhaps if there are more trucks coming into the stores there will be faster delivery times.

  • J.C. Penney (JCP) EVP of construction Ben Fay has reportedly left the company. Of interest, in light of JCP's ambitions to revamp its stores, and given recent reports that JCP may have cut corners on building codes in an effort to speed construction.  [View news story]
Apparently our store missed the moves very slowly here. Now maybe finished in June....sigh.

  • J.C. Penney (JCP) CEO Ron Johnson's pay fell sharply last year as the company struggled to get its footing. The absence of stock awards meant Johnson made only $1.9M in 2012, a far cry from the $53.3M in total compensation he received a year earlier.   [View news story]
Ron sold 777,000 plus shares of stock in Jan. 2012 at 41.42 a share. I think it's listed in the SEC filings. He was awarded 1,660,000 plus shares on 10/31/2011 at .0 per share. You do the math.... Hey wasn't that an ad campaign?
