  • A federal jury in Florida has decided in favor of Philip Morris (PM) and another tobacco company in the second federal Engle case - which allows former class action members to file individual lawsuits - to go to trial. Since January 2011, about two thirds of the cases tried in Florida have resulted on verdicts for the company or mistrials. Shares -0.6% AH.  [View news story]
I think the ticker should be MO not PM. MO is Altria, the parent company of Philip Morris USA. PM is Phillip Morris International and was not a party to this case.

  • Though prices haven't changed, new iPad (AAPL) models cost 21%-25% more to make than comparable iPad 2 models, estimates iSuppli, after tearing down a unit. The 16GB Wi-Fi model, which retails for $499, is believed to cost $316 to make (and that excludes R&D, SG&A, and iCloud expenses). The $829 64GB 4G model sports a better margin, given an estimated cost of only $409. (previously)  [View news story]
I think the point being made in a tear down such as this is the *relative* costs of the components. It's not expected to be the actual cost Apple pays but the new iPad simply costs more than the iPad 2.

Uhm... I think all knowledge of which you seek comes down to this: "Buy low, sell high"

    It's quite simple really.

  • Saying Apple (AAPL) has reached the "trading toy stage," Robert Sinn reminds of the track record of other stocks that have recently garnered the public imagination - it's not good. "Volume and volatility create action, excitement, and opportunity. However, the action we are currently witnessing in Apple is not healthy."  [View news story]
I read that a lot of hedge funds are buying apple. Even those that are supposed to be dividend only or small cap only or whatever. Everyone wants to have a piece of apple. No one wants to explain why they didn't have any apple in their portfolios.

  • What Apple And Starbucks Share: Luxury, Status And Premium Pricing [View article]
So, are we to buy AAPL, SBUX or both? Also, there is recent news of Starbucks getting into the single brew market. Sounds like that is going to be HUGE. Or at least bigger than green mountain coffee's single brew system.

  • Apple's (AAPL) iPhoto app, announced yesterday at its iPad event, uses home-grown mapping software rather than Google Maps (GOOG). The switch could be evidence that Apple, which has acquired 3 mapping startups in recent years, plans to phase out its integration of Google Maps with iOS in favor of a proprietary solution.  [View news story]
Apple can be the company to prove Google is not unique. It follows from Steve Jobs desire to "go thermo nuclear" on Google.

  • The Apple Flash Crash [View article]
Did it really bounce back? It ended the day more than 2% down and after hours is down some more. I don't agree that trailing stops are a bad thing. My option was "taken out" but I don't mind. I'll get back in when I see a sustained upward movement. It saved me a lot of money but more than that it saved me a lot of grief. If it heads lower, and is sustained, I'll be in for some puts.

  • DA Davidson agrees with Herb Greenberg's assessment of Diamond Foods (DMND +1.9%) this morning. The firm says the Diamond's recent announcement that it was terminating its purchase of Pringles was a positive for the stock, and brings it closer to being acquired by Kellogg (K -0.1%).  [View news story]
Wouldn't it be ironic justice that Kellogg acquire Pringles AND Diamond Foods?
