$48 a share for PEP was reached during the low points of 2009. It'll take something considerable to cause the stock to plummet to that level in the current environment.

I agree. It's a pure regurgitation of companies that have either been beaten down, or are in the middle of litigation. Therefore, someone will always say that there's a potential "Deal" to be made.

Ah yes, now investors are somehow "different" than they were ten years ago. Then, they were just euphoric. Today's are just automatons. I mean, seriously, can you find a more sophomoric comment? This is just more "the world is going to end" garbage.

I don't care how many followers you have, it's tough to take anyone who writes something like this seriously.

  • Six Companies With 20% Yields on Cost  [View article]
Hmmm, not sure I agree with your point about the cash on the balance sheet. For instance, has Microsoft investors been rewarded for the company having $5 to $10 billion dollars worth of cash sitting in their coffers over the past several years?

I guess I'm missing your point now. You're saying it doesn't matter if you invested $100 in JNJ and that the dividend yield has effectively risen from 3% to 10% (not sure if that's exact or not...just a for instance) because your capital has also risen by a similar amount. But that's not been the case. The capital may have gained about 25%, while the dividend tripled. Your point on Con Ed is well founded...certainly where they are getting the money for the dividend is key, but I don't think the author of the article suggested otherwise.

I would argue that by your definitions that you've provided, and by factoring out their dividends and dividend growth, JNJ, WMT, and KO have been less than inspiring investments over the past ten years and are probably not good companies to invest in.

  • Morgan Stanley downgrades PG&E (PCG -7.2%) based on uncertainty surrounding the California pipeline explosion. "If Pacific Gas & Electric is exonerated, the financial impact would likely be small," analyst Greg Gordon says. "If it is found to be at fault, the impact could be large." Such is the legacy of the BP disaster, when an accident - and a stock price - can spiral out of control.   [View news story]
    wcinvest -

750K per house in an area where house prices start around that is probably not very conservative. That's before you factor in potential lawsuits and liability for the 6 deaths. I wouldn't be too quick to jump in here.

I'm not sure what lawsuit you're referring to. DiSH has been granted a full court review of a ruling that DiSH lost. The courts found for TiVO, not DiSH. I think you're underestimating the risk in your short thesis.
