A Sobering Perspective on China's High Speed Rail
"Just one example of profligacy and waste in China"? There may be some examples of profligacy and waste in China, but definitely not this one.
I actually visited China this past summer. They don't have an alternative but to promote public and rapid railway transportation. Here in the US, you can have two cars for the average family, but they can't do that over there. They've got four times as many people . Four times as many cars on the road but with a land mass just about the size of the U. S? This is just unimaginable. They already have a huge problem with the traffic and the pollution, especially in the urban areas. The strain on their resources would be unsustainable if they attempted to model after the U.S. style of suburban living. (On the other hand, I don't think a public rapid rail system connecting the mega cities in the U. S. will work, because we are so much less densely populated and we value individual freedom.)
Rapid railway system is the only viable alternative to air and personal transportation. In fact, railway usage just set a record one-day high:
Has this academic ever actually visited China to see for himself or did he just want to get something published for the sake of publishing?
