  • Is The Shiller P/E Broken? [View article]
What I've learned from the Schiller P/E:

1921, 1932, 1949, 1982 and 2008 were great times to go large in the market. But there are many other indices that tell that very same story.

Foreign companies: with only two exceptions, I only buy those traded on the NYSE, since then you are assured of uniform accounting standards (hopefully).

  • Kinder Morgan scrapping MLP structure in $44B deal [View news story]
I had thought it would be two or three years down the road. Not surprised that it's happening (Rich has often stated his digust with the market price), but with the timing.

Ain't complaining one bit. Own tons of KMP and some KMI. What will Monday morning bring?

  • Kinder Morgan: There Is No Need To Worry [View article]
Great news from KMI today. Additional reasons not to worry. Or panic, even. Can't wait to see what the market makes of it Monday.

  • Kinder Family Consolidation, Please Post Your Informed Comments.  [View instapost]
Rich Kinder has hinted in the last several conference calls that 1) he is fed up with people not giving proper valuation to the KMI companies, and (2) that they are seriously looking at ways to do something about it.

I'm not surprised at this announcement, but thought it wouldn't happen for several more years until after some of their major projects are completed - especially the TransMountain Pipeline expansion in British Columbia.

Can't wait to see what the market makes of it Monday morning.

  • Kinder Morgan Partners to expand Edmonton Crude Oil rail terminal [View news story]
At the last conference call the KM management said there are still 298 million warrants outstanding. That was in response to an analyst's (anal cyst?) question.

It's a huge overhang, and there could be a possibility that they expire worthless. It might be an interesting race.

  • GE Is Divesting, But Some Segments Aren't Worth Much [View article]
This is a good article, and points out that 1) GE has several low-margin businesses, and 2) why, after all these years, does GE still have several low-margined businesses?

There are many very large companies that are far more nimble than Immelt & co., and LED lighting doesn't look like a game changer.

Perhaps the sleeping giant is starting to wake up. If so, I'll continue to hold my shares.

  • My 2 Concerns About General Electric's Synchrony Spin-Off [View article]
Didn't Jack Welch retire more than ten years ago? The problem isn't that Welch built it, but that his successors haven't done a very good job of improving the company. GE is a great company run by a mediocre management.

Sounds like a nice plan, Mr. Tuna. Only that the dime may be worth only a nickel pretty soon (if the decline in M2 velocity turns around). That could even be optimistic. Cheers!

  • U.S. Stock Market Update [View article]
Thanks for a very interesting article, Gary.

There is usually some kind of unexpected catalyst to get an overextended market to correct - a surprise default, economic stat, political wackiness, whatever. Perhaps what will decide between getting a healthy correction or this continuance of staying overbought will the appearance of a catalyst.

There are plenty of bubbles to be burst in the markets. Wonder which will be first?

It's more than just a negative correlation.

  • What To Do When You Can't Find Anything To Buy [View article]
The bull market may not be dead, but it sure is starting to smell funny. I loath selling stock (I still own some bought in the '70's), but have been getting rid of the mosre egregious valuations.

I've had some luck trollling the 52-week low list. Recent finds are KMI, L, SCL, and CUB. These have all bounced back up. Here is the link I use:

What to do with cash? The best I can find right now is a short-term investment grade fund - about 3% with some hope of preservation of capital

Thanks for a very good article, II.
