Apple (AAPL) says it has already sold out the supply of new iPads set aside for pre-order, and will push back their ship date to Friday, which is the official launch date. Apple had previously told customers they would receive their pre-ordered iPads the same day the tablet goes on sale in stores. [View news story]
Hmm - I will have to look up that median income stuff. I went to the Bureau of labor statistics a few weeks ago to get this data. Maybe I misread it.
The Chinese government will wait 2-3 years to issue licenses for 4G networks based on the TD-LTE standard, says a government official. Such a holdup could be problematic for China Mobile (CHL), which has been conducting TD-LTE trials. It could also be a negative for Apple (AAPL) and 4G chipmaker Sequans (SQNS); the former has reportedly promised China Mobile a TD-LTE iPhone, while the latter has taken part in trials. [View news story]
The opertive comment was that China wants to have an adequate supply of 4G-LTE phones available. If Apple arrives in early 2013 with such a phone in quantity, I am sure licenses will be made available.
Apple's (AAPL) strategy of aligning itself with just one mobile carrier in China appears to have backfired, where the iPhone has amassed only a 7.5% share vs. Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) 24.3%. Apple launched sales through China Telecom (CHA) last week, which should help boost its share. But CHA, though huge by western standards, is the smallest of China's top three carriers. Yup - and a third is coming when Apple's tech capability can align with China Mobile's technology.

Mark, surely no one here is on food stamps. But, Apple has taken a strong constitution to stick with the last several years. They can drop 15% in a couple of weeks. They are so news driven. It is not obvious what their next innovation will be. This has been and continues to be a classic Peter Lynch play. For those who use the products, you can judge for yourself their utility/disruptive nature, do your own market research by seeing them appear everywhere in public as well as judging the crowds within their stores (while other stores are empty).
But, back to food stamps. Or maybe just to the median family of 4 with $75,000 annual gross income. They will spend money at XMAS. iPads, iPod Touches and iPhones are some of the most wished for items. Many prioritize these over other things.
As an aside. I lived in Shanghai in 2006-9. I was living in the financial district and the locals had to take the subway to work. Roads are a mess with traffic and local apartment too expensive. The vast majority of people you would see are typical upper middle class. Which is a couple of strata lower then here. Annual income may at most be $15-20,000 US. Everyone was carrying a pay as you go mobile. So many had iPods in their ears. A frightening number had Sony PSPs in their hands to game with. At work - EVERYONE had the latest portable game player of fad. This was all before the iPad. They were prioritizing such purchases for personal entertainment. One thing you learn living in Asia with the high population density is that outdoor play is limited. Indoor fun for relaxation dominates. I remember reading an article about a Hong Kong manufacturer of radio control toy cars. He sold so few in Asia because of the small apartment style living.

Take that back. Just got the shipping confirmation. Whoo Hooo!!!

Ron - so true! And Steve Jobs always talked about the customers they chooses to serve.
Despite that, while my retired mother could not afford one, I gave one to her. She uses it more than her desktop computer, because she surfs in from of the TV. She carries to many places and is saving money on newspaper subscriptions, etc. I think many people who don;t have a disposable income still need a computer. The cheap ones they buy don't last so long or get bogged down with spyware, etc. I am sure many of these people at new purchase time think about an iPad.

I ordered on the 64 GB 4G on the 7th, only because the web site kept crashing on the 6th. Delivery date promised was March 16th. No shipping confirmation yet from Apple, so I am skeptical. Many others I know have received shipping confirmations.
Apple: Is There Still Scope To Innovate? [View article]
One of Apple's great strengths is to to see what is already there or emerging in a hackneyed way and not be afraid to do it right even if the first version is pricey. MacBook Air, iPod, iPhone. They gain initial users and with time iterate the deign and control costs. In some cases, they are able to wait until they can bring elegance and affordability - iPad. Apple will always be under the lens of "what's next?". I do;t think they pressure themselves to invent the next big thing. None of their ideas were completely new products. I doubt any will be in the future. They just need to see great ideas, with large potential that are imperfectly executed. Then they will acquire and perfect or do it organically.
I think the harder transition for Apple will be how to reward investors. We don't know when ridiculous growth will stop. 2 years? 5 years? But it will and they will still be a cash generating machine with the cash to privatize themselves. Too much cash.
Winners, Losers In Apple's iPad Announcement [View article]
A lot of have small positions and hold for the long term. We love to engage in discussion about the underlying long term revenue and profit potential of Apple. Saying you work on Wall Street and talk of what folks with a "big position" can do for short term swings is a different conversation. A good conversation, but different from a lot of the discussion That said, a lot of the articles posted on SA (not the comments) appear to be attempts at page views, developing loyalties to support personal marketing, etc. But - I thought this was a good article.
Working With Your Retirement Number [View article]
Excellent article. When you consider the five major uncertainties in retirement planning:
1. Social security 2. Inflation 3. Long term investment yields 4. Actual lifestyle needs 5. Healthcare
realistically most people will need to save more AND work longer than their dreamed of early retirements. Working longer is not so onerous because as we approach retirement we realize at a minimum, we desire to retain a higher standard of living as if we were still working.

Warren, 5 MP is the iPad camera. I carry high end Nikon DSLRs into the field. Now I have a large monitor with touch editing at a fraction of the weight of a laptop.

I don't think Apple bragged about specs anymore than they do minimally at all times. They are bragging about engineering prowess to deliver an incredible product experience. If the iPad 2 floats your boat, don't upgrade. Orr buy one for $360 at Best Buy. To serious photography enthusiasts, the Retina Display and the new iPhoto give the very first useful capability for travel work. The color gamut is now expanded to acceptable standards. Ever add warmth to a photo on an iPad 2 and then export to the web? When you got home you realized the color was oversaturated in orange. Poor color gamut!
We could not import and work on screen easily with large RAW files. Now we can. Remember, Canon and Nikon sell combined over 10 million DSLRs a year. There is a large installed based of serious pros and hobbyists who are tied to heavy laptops or even desktops. Now the new iPad gives a lot of field capability while being a joy to use all year. And the price did not increase.
10 years after the launch of the iPod they dominate the market for portable music players. Albeit that market is declining because of the iPhone, the iPad is just at the beginning.
