  • Stocks are not cheap, writes John Hussman, warning of the Street being "lulled into complacency" by record profit margins, and by comparison to the valuations during the late-90s bubble. Tossing both aside, he finds the S&P 40-70% above valuation norms, roughly the same level as reached at the beginning of the 1965 secular bear market. (see also[View news story]

  • BlackRock (BLK) director James Grosfeld purchased $94M of company stock over the past month, bringing his stake up to $130M. It's one of the largest insider buys across the entire market in the last 9 years, says InsiderScore's Ben Silverman. • Apple (AAPL) roundup: 1) Apple has bought 1,024 patents from Rockstar Bidco, a consortium that won the Nortel patent auction for $4.5B, and in which Apple has a 58% stake. 2) Foxconn has seen rising orders for 15" MacBook Pro units, according to Digitimes. 3) SA's Gary Morton argues FQ4 EPS, which missed estimates by $0.08, was understated by $0.25 due to the timing of a currency hedging premium. He expects this timing issue to boost FQ1 and FQ2 EPS. [View news story]

  • Qualcomm's device guidance may have been responsible for Apple's (AAPL -3.7%) selloff today, thinks Tero Kuittinen. Though Qualcomm left the midpoint of its 2012 3G/4G device shipment range unchanged at 905M, it lowered its forecast for developed markets by 15M (page 11 of earnings slides). Apple's unsubsidized pricing leaves it very dependent on developed markets - cheaper Android phones are dominating in cost-sensitive locales. • Delta Air Lines (DAL) is starting to profit from its purchase of the 185K bbl/day refinery in Trainer, Pa., earlier this year. The refinery is ramping up toward producing 52K bbl/day of jet fuel, most of which will be used at JFK and LaGuardia airports. DAL consumes 260K-300K bbl/day of jet fuel worldwide, and hopes Trainer will help it begin saving $300M/year on fuel. [View news story]

The take from the firm is that performance of the Ugg brand will improve again and drive shares up to $50, from their current sub-$30 level. For the Jefferies story to play out, Deckers Outdoor will need some help from Mother Nature after last winter's mild temperatures dulled demand for Ugg boots. [View news story]
