I'm with you Cliff, news yesterday that banks, insurance and pension funds are massively buying the stock at these prices. Put the shares away, enjoy the holiday season and next year we'll be celebrating.

you can't say that with any certainty.

BB could licence out the encryption to everyone for a reasonable royalty and make a killing in the process.

I doubt the gov't would interfere unless BB was greedy and price gouged.

From the sounds of it the world will be knocking on BBRY's door within 3-5 years to maintain their security:

thanks for your responses and I agree with you. I think we are basically on the same page with me being more optimistic on a JV in the near future being announced.

Now that BB10 can do pretty much what the other smartphones can people/corporations will slowly wake up to this and some will give BB another chance.

The future definitely lies in services and software and with Chen at the helm I feel a whole lot better about the situation.

High risk? yes. But not so much at $6.50 a share given the downside protection from the assets.

The big wildcard here is BBM. If that slowly captures people's interest because of the superior quality and reliability then BB has a major asset on their hands that I have little doubt they will figure out how to monetize. BBMoney could be one way.

I was just relieved to not be taken out for good at $9. I will happily stomach the $5-7 range for a quarter or two so long as the ship is indeed turning around.

Thanks for your insights, much appreciated.

@slick, thanks for your replies, I know I missed one a couple of days back that you had directed at me as I read it on my phone and couldn't respond and then didn't track it down afterwards...

You may have noticed that I am one of your followers and value your opinion and obvious knowledge about this sector....having said that I feel you are a bit too 'close' to what you study and have lost perspective, the losing the forest for the trees phenomenon.

Yes I am down on my investment. The fundamental reasons why I chose to bet on BBRY haven't changed though- they have had the vision to create a platform that is 'future-proof' whereas their competitors are quickly becoming bloatware or security nightmares.

I value security and whether it is in the next year or three the vast majorities of consumers who actually have disposable income to spend and protect will too once there is a mass breach the kind of which we just witnessed with the Adobe theft.

Let's talk about the situation as it is: BBRY announced they were up for sale. Many tech titans came and kicked the tires and most (except for Samsung and SAP) indicated that they interest for some or all of the company. Yes Lenovo and the Cerberus group would have bid for the entire company. So first off BBRY has assets of value that others want.

As for the Google/patents aspect of this, BBRY could indeed enable Google to gain access to the Rockstar patents if they chose to licence or if they are bought out by Google. Considering Google is getting sued by MSFT and AAPL one would think this heightens the need and value for BBRY's share of the Nortel Patent trove.

As for the Google Playstore, yes the company has issued a statement denying the validity of the claim however in 10.2.1 using Android apps becomes a cinch. See:http://bit.ly/19ibu2X and http://bit.ly/19ibu2Z

Finally, while yes I am speculating, it isn't a huge stretch to anticipate a JV with one or more of the potential bidders who BB has now developed a relationship with. Hardware to Lenovo? BES to Cisco? Patent Licences to Google/Samsung? BBM to FB??? any of these are plausible.

Taking this into account with the infusion of cash and trimmed workforce, a shining new CEO with ties to all of Silicon Valley, and that my friend is what I call a strong buy at current beaten up and deflated valuation levels.

    Peace yo

from what I'm reading in the blogosphere the Android Apps will run natively and fully-secure as in BB-level secure.

    If true this is huge.

    you guys crack me up.

here's a taste of how the iphone virtual keyboard is primitive:

you can't swipe to erase words..you have to manually hit delete delete delete delete.

when typing a word it gives you only one suggestion.

I do have an iphone, well ipod to be exact, and typing on it is for the birds.

    "Why would Google help Blackberry?"

Really? You have to ask that question??

    Well here are some answers:

    1. Google is getting sued by the Apple/Microsoft alliance on the Nortel patents. Blackberry owns a share of the Nortel patents. Google could really use this.

    2. If BB uses Android Apps that is more revenue for Google. More revenue for Android Developers. More eyes on google's search and advertising.

    3. It alleviates the monopoly that Samsung enjoys and creates more competition and options for potential Android App consumers. Why wouldn't Google want this?

    4. Google was just recently in talks with BB management regarding the sale of the company. Who is to say that relationships haven't been formed and a deal discussed to allow for BB to have access to the PlayStore in return for use of BB's patents?
