  • The Energy Sector: Focus On Unconventional Oil And Gas For Long-Term Gains [View article]
Matthew, I'm afraid they need to be reduced quickly. Unfortunately for you, we adults dropped the ball for the past twenty plus years and only paid lip service to reducing CO2 in the atmosphere. The fact of the matter is we have to keep 80% of the known fossil fuel reserves where they are...in the ground. If you place your investment dollars in "unconventional extraction", you are making a "vote", more CO2 in the atmosphere and more warming.

Hmmm, all because of "natural gas"? Not because we had an warm winter, nor a transfer of manufacturing industries overseas because of the recession. Also, that "20%" reduction is only what is "accounted" for by survey. Did they account for the escaped natural gas and methane when drilled? Did they also account for the polluted watershed when fracking chemicals are injected?

So Mathew, you are a young man. Let me pose this question to you. How much is your well being worth? Could you place a price on that? That being said, making money is indeed rewarding. How is being made?
If you are indeed a "value investor", perhaps you need to consider climate change that will incur because of these "investments". What good will these "profits" do you and others in your generation if the global warming reaches a point in which society is stresssed. Please, I realize there are many who claim "it is not happening". However, don't take my word, the CEO of Exxon-Mobile (another value investor) admits it is and will impact the climate. His "solution" to your generation is "adapt and engineer (like move around crops!)" . Rex Tillerson is 60 years old so he won't have the challenge to face it all.

How "elastic" is price/demand? All I know that to get to work and back I require 7 gallons a week, regardless of the price.
Interesting article, since Japans disaster the nuclear plants have been shut down, increasing the need for oil and may be a factor this summer if they do not reopen

  • Analyzing the Global Oil Supply: 2012 Is the Year for Peak Oil [View article]
You consume unconventional "oils" and the carbon emission output will easily create conditions for a run-a-way greenhouse effect on planet EAARTH. Unfortunately, that appears what we are set to do and have no concept of external costs as far as environmental impact of our actions. One can not expect to dump 90 million metric tons of carbon in the air ever day and not expect to have climate change.
The financial system is not set up to address this issue and the science is settled and we are handicapped because of the failure to come to terms with the cost of the transition.

Boy, if we resort to shale, tar sands and liquid coal, you can kiss our planet's climate goodbye. Actually, it is pretty much there right now. Great going boys!

Two factors that are overlooked, net energy from extracting the resource and the amount of extra carbon and other waste that will be emitted into the planet's system.
