One click of our heels and we're off to see the WiZaRD – in New York, this coming December.

That would be the show by that name, which brings to the fore the music of one of the most prolific – and least known– songwriters of the Great American Songbook, films and Broadway, Harold Arlen, who wrote the entire musical score for The Wizard of Oz (with lyrics by E.Y. “Yip” Harburg). After being workshopped in 22 cities around the country in an 18-month period, this production that transports audiences to a magical time in entertainment history has proven that it has all the courage, heart, and brains behind it that it needs – the Lion, Tin Man, and Scarecrow aside. WiZaRD is now ready for a trip down the Yellow Brick Road to bestow some long-deserved name recognition on the man who gave the 1939 movie, and more than 500 songs, musical life.

Although Arlen, who was inducted into the songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 1971 and died in 1986 at the age of 81, wrote some of the Great American Songbook's biggest hits and well-known tunes, many people are simply unaware of that fact. That’s what this concert production seeks to remedy.

“People are always surprised to find out that he wrote the songs he did,” notes Sam Arlen, the songwriter's son and the publisher of most of his father's catalog. “Once I started licensing his catalog and talking to all the different publicity companies, licensers and performers and found out how little they knew about the catalog in my father’s name, I began a mission to have his name recognized. Even where The Wizard of Oz alone is concerned, both the film and the music have become an anthem to so many people.”

“My father never had a publicist – by choice,” continues Arlen, talking about why his father doesn’t have the name recognition of a Gershwin or an Irving Berlin. “He felt that his music would do the talking for him. From the outside, the house in the exclusive Las Vegas Country Club appears to be par for the course – just another home on the green built during the 1970’s that possesses an old Vegas charm all of its own.

But once inside, the details or “bullet” points emerge. Things like hidden compartments in the top of closets, bulletproof glass windows, 150-pound doors made of metal and triple-thickness wood, a steel staircase, remnants of a state-of-the-art monitoring system and more denote that this was once the home of Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal, the organized crime figure who secretly ran the Stardust and other casinos (without a Nevada gaming license) when they were controlled by the Chicago Outfit. The house, currently up for sale with an asking price of $677,000, is concrete proof of the real inside story in Las Vegas history not depicted in the movie Casino, of which Rosenthal, played by Robert DeNiro, was the subject.

“This historical property is more than a home – it’s a lifestyle,” says Celebrity Real Estate Agent Aaron Auxier. “It’s an opportunity you can’t refuse.”

Although Rosenthal, who died at his Miami Beach, Florida, home at age 79 on October 14, 2008, was forced out of Las Vegas in 1988 after being placed in the persona non gratis “Black Book,” the house he left behind still resonates with the spirit of the era.

 

“Rosenthal bought the house brand new in 1970,” says photographer Jeff Green, the house’s current owner. “In 1976, the house next door caught fire and it spread to this house. So Frank had the Stardust redo it the way he wanted it. He spent $500,000 back then. It had sophisticated equipment with which he could monitor his office at the Stardust and the front and back doors of the house. There were also pressure plates so that he could hear someone coming up the stairs.”

The 3,266-square-foot house retains the original entryway, bar, mirrored ceilings, wood ceilings, built-in, upstairs catwalk, sunken rectangular bathtub, door handles, faucets, key box, pool, art pieces by Bill Barnes, some wallpaper and other things. It was designed by famed designer Steven Chase of Palm Springs. Rosenthal, who made $250,000 a year at the Stardust but made millions as a renowned sports bettor and handicapper, spared no expense.

 

“He had an outside box to hook up a telephone, which is still there,” Green notes. “He also had the balcony outside his bedroom removed for safety reasons. At one point, in the early 80’s, it was said that he had guards on the golf course. The curved two-story window in the back of the house is cut into the brick and there is a mark on it that they say is from a gun during an assassination attempt.”

Born in Chicago on June 12, 1939, Rosenthal's arrival in Las Vegas was far from welcome. Upon checking into the Tropicana hotel and going to his room to unpack his bags, he answered a knock on his door and found several plainclothes detectives standing there, who promptly arrested him for breaking and entering. They whisked him off to an interrogation room where he was told on no uncertain terms by the chief of detectives that he and his Chicago friends weren't welcome in town and to take the next flight out and not come back.

 

Of course, Rosenthal stayed, having been tapped to run the new Stardust Hotel and Casino, He was at its helm from the 60s through the early 80s and, at one time, he was not only the official CEO of that property but also of the Hacienda, Fremont, and Marina casinos simultaneously. A perfectionist, he ran a tight ship when it came to customer service and had no tolerance for cheaters and scams. According to Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, Rosenthal's attorney back in 1970, Rosenthal once ordered his casino security men to crush the right hand of a card cheat he had caught. They used a rubber mallet so it wouldn't leave marks and the man became a lefty.

 

Rosenthal was full of novel ideas and, in an effort to keep his casinos turning profits,was always trying new things. A pioneer in sports gambling, he was the first casino operator in the city to implement a Race & Sports betting parlor, resulting in the other Vegas properties following suit. Another of his innovations was the institution of female blackjack dealers, which doubled the Stardust's income within one year. During his heyday, he created his own local TV show called “The Frank Rosenthal Show” and hosted guests from Frank Sinatra to Bob Hope and Mohammed Ali.

In 1982, Rosenthal survived a car bombing assassination attempt in a parking lot on East Sahara Avenue, thanks to a strong metal plate under the driver's seat of his 1981 Cadillac Eldorado, The plate had been installed by GM to correct a balancing problem and ended up absorbing most of the force of the explosion. It is not known who rigged the car with the explosives.

 

That same year, Rosenthal's drug-and-alcohol-addicted ex-wife Geri, with whom he had two children, died at a Los Angeles motel, apparently from a drug overdose, at the age of 46. After leaving Rosenthal, the former showgirl had stolen a substantial portion of his savings.

Rosenthal was denied a license to operate a casino and was blacklisted in 1988 by the Nevada Gaming Commission for being a suspect in directing a casino on behalf of organized crime and directing the money skimming operation. That came about as a result of the FBI having bugged Rosenthal's table in the lounge at the Stardust where he used to sit and have conversations with his friends, the Spilatro Brothers, who had set up a huge crime operation in Las Vegas. Rosenthal's unsavory reputation was, in large part, due to his ongoing boyhood friendship with Chicago hitman Anthony Spilatro.

Rosenthal, once called “the greatest living expert on sports gambling” by Sports Illustrated, has come to be known as the most important man in Las Vegas' gambling history. Outside phone aside, when his house “talks,” people listen. It’s a chapter of Las Vegas’ unique past you won’t find anywhere else -- a true mob scene in its finest sense.

BOSTON -- New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was in a two-car accident near his home at about 6:30 a.m. Thursday morning but was unhurt and attended practice later in the day at Gillette Stadium.

The crash at Commonwealth Avenue and Gloucester Street in Boston’s Back Bay area knocked over a light pole and sent a passenger in the other vehicle to the hospital with injuries that were serious but not considered life-threatening, officials. No charges have been filed.

A witness told The Associated Press that the two-time Super Bowl MVP was approaching the intersection on a green light when his Audi collided with a minivan. No charges have been filed.

Brady’s father had just arrived in Boston from the family’s California home early Thursday and found out about the accident when he got off his flight.

“I understand he’s fine, but I haven’t talked to him,” Tom Brady Sr. told reporters outside his son’s home three blocks from the accident site.

Brady arrived at the stadium Thursday morning and was involved in parts of meetings and a walkthrough in addition to participating in the team's practice session as it prepares for Sunday's season-opener against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick told the team about the accident before practice and said Brady might be a bit late, linebacker Tully Banta-Cain said.

“I was hoping, obviously, that he was OK, but I saw him walking in. He had a smile on his face, no abrasions, so I think he’s fine,” Banta-Cain said.

Added veteran tight end Alge Crumpler: "He's here, he's ready to go."

Rookie tight end Rob Gronkowski said he caught a pass from Brady in the pre-practice walkthrough and that it was as crisp as ever.

"We're just all thankful he's fine, and glad he's back here already, and back working," Gronkowski said.

One of Brady's neighbors, a 74-year-old woman who asked that her name not be used for fear of being hounded by media inquiries, was walking her dogs when she saw the accident.

She said Brady was traveling south on Gloucester and approaching the intersection on a green light when his black Audi collided with a fast-moving red Ford Aerostar that was westbound on Commonwealth.

"The red car went up in the air, sideways. ... The tire was half off," the woman said.

Afterward, she said Brady immediately got out of his car.

The woman had been near the intersection when the crash occurred and fell down and hit her head while bracing for impact.

She said the two sat next to each other in an ambulance, but neither was taken to the hospital. She did not realize he was the star quarterback until later.

"I want to thank the safety personnel for their service, and express our concern and support for the well-being of the occupants of the other vehicle," Brady's agent, David Yee, said in a statement. "I don't have any other information to share at this time."

Another witness, Bill Barron, said he was in his apartment overlooking the intersection when he heard a collision that sounded like "a bolt of lightning."

When he looked out the window, he saw the driver of the car picking glass off his clothes and wiping himself off with a towel. He didn't realize until later that it was Brady.

 

"I thought it was some college kid who had crashed up his father's really nice car," Barron said.

Brady then retrieved some items from his car, made a series of phone calls and was picked up by another vehicle, Barron said.

The accident caused something of a media stir at Gillette Stadium on Thursday. As reporters rushed into the locker room when the media access period began, many filmed pictures of Brady's locker, where a pair of jeans and a shirt were placed over a chair.

It was a much busier scene than normal, with several television stations on hand preparing to go on the air live.

Left tackle Matt Light found the crowd humorous as he walked through the locker room and cracked, "It's just a car accident, people."

The Patriots open their season at home Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals. Brady remains in talks with the Patriots about a contract extension and is entering the final year of his current contract—a six-year, $57.3 million deal. Contract discussions between the Patriots and Brady escalated Tuesday to the point where a deal could be completed before New England opens its regular season Sunday, a source close to the situation told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Discussions between the two sides have focused on a four-year deal. The previous two contracts that Brady has signed have been for four years, and the expectation is this one also will be for four. Brady has deflected questions about a potential contract extension, repeatedly saying his focus instead was on the season opener.

"I don't want to get into it," Brady said during his weekly appearance on Boston sports radio station WEEI on Wednesday morning. "For me, it's the same as it's been. I'm trying to find a way to score some touchdowns against the Bengals. I didn't spend five minutes yesterday thinking about my contract or future."

Brady would like to finalize the deal this week, before the Patriots open the season. This is logical. In the Patriots' opener two seasons ago, then Kansas City safety Bernard Pollard rolled into Brady's knee, injuring it and ending the quarterback's season.
