I own both, but if I could buy only one, I'd buy PM.

  • 5 Buffett And Munger Value Stocks With Solid Profit Potential For 2013 [View article]
WU is one of those companies that is very cheap for a reason, unfortunately. Reduced rates of immigration will hurt it, too.

  • Big Bakken Sale Should Improve Fortunes For This Fast Growing 4% Yielder [View article]
Very smart recommendation, Bret. You were dead right, and may continue to be, on this one. The Williston Basin asset sale represented only 12.5% of BKH's energy reserves.

"Fair value" is a vague concept and always a moving target. The PE's of these companies are ludicrously low and I think you get great value and terrific potential at current prices.

I used to believe that NG-transportation technology lacked the potential for scaleability and would forever be hopelessly impractical. I was wrong. I'm feeling quite confident about my investment in CMI, which has the added bonus of having very smart, forward-thinking management. CAT is also a good company but doesn't equal CMI's unusually competent management. Ideally, you own both of them.

  • No Lost Decade If You Bought Dividend Stocks [View article]
Unless there's a major company-specific problem, I don't agree with that particular activity. It translates into "selling your winners." Don't sell your winners! Don't punish a stock for doing well.

I consider XOM one of the true "no-brainer" stocks out there. EPD is another great outfit with far more upside than downside. But IF I had to put all my apples in one basket, I'd pick XOM. GE, IP, and BlackRock are much inferior.

  • 5 Stocks With Payout Ratios Over 100 Percent [View article]
I feel that authors of articles on SA should have to demonstrate some sort of competence or expertise in their subject matter before being published. As many other commentators have observed, the author has no understanding of the MLP business model. Articles like this one do readers a disservice or are actually dangerous, in the sense that others may act on such misinformation. In the past, trained professionals known as editors performed critical filtering and analysis before publication---or sent such material to expert reviewers. This absurd although probably well-meant article would have been rejected and returned to the author with a polite note and possibly a detailed explanation. Not in this day and age. Everybody is an "expert."

I myself am not an expert on MLPs, and would never presume to publish an article either critical of or positive about them. I do own two MLPs, based in part on the opinions of people qualified to offer them.
