  • 5 Dividend Divas From My Portfolio [View article]
I like all your picks, J.D. Of them, I own Abbott and Exelon. Abbott is doing very well as it gets ready to spin off part of its business. Exelon is sort of down in the dumps, but that could change once the integration of Constellation is complete. I used to own KMB but became concerned it was getting overvalued, and sold it (wish I hadn't). MCD and UPS are clearly great stocks and I wish I had them.

You didn't mention dividend growth, but that can be even more important than present yield. Most of your stocks are good dividend growers.

I also own ADP, PAYX, AWK, WTR, KMI, KMR, XOM, COP, CVX, MVO, PAA, PM, PG, PNY, SBR, LNCE, PKG, and a few others. All killers or near-killers in the dividend department.

    You just can't beat dividends.

By the way, congrats on educating yourself and dumping your broker. An online, self-managed account is the ONLY way to go. I'm partial to Scottrade, myself.

  • Kinder Morgan: Significantly Overvalued [View article]
I've been reading about what a dangerous investment the Kinder Morgan stocks are for many years. I'm glad I ignored all those articles. The current price may be justified by Kinder Morgan's growth prospects, which remain stupendous, and by its management, which is the best in the business. Also the price has to reflect the value of future distributions, which are enormous.

Badger Meter is a fine little growth stock, with a bright future. I've been very pleased with over the years.

PM and MO myself. Esp. PM. May long live the right of individuals to make their own personal choices, to weigh costs and benefits.

Any airline stock is a huge risk. Period. Good for gamblers, though.

A menthol ban will absolutely kill LO. And there's a good chance it will happen. I've avoided LO for this reason. MO and especially PM are safer bets.

  • Schlumberger Limited: Many Catalysts Will Drive This Undervalued Stock [View article]
XOM has been hugely undervalued for a long, long time. But its day will come . . . eventually. In the meantime, decent secure dividends flow in.

  • Long-Term Dividend Portfolio With Low Risk That Has Outperformed The Market [View article]
The recent price drop in MOS presented a classic buying opportunity. Those who bought shares in the low 40s are already sitting on a large (hopefully unrealized) gain.

MOS has great financials, is in an absolutely essential industry, and is in my view a great recommendation for a long-term hold. It's still very cheap.

  • California Water Service Group: After Recent Declines, Investors Should Take Note [View article]
I wonder how threatened the operations of CWT are, ultimately, by the essentially permanent drought in the Southwest (and in Hawaii, as a matter of fact). And yes the earthquake risk is high. One big quake and the water pipelines would be shot all to hell. I prefer AWK and WTR. They seem like safer investments.

73% is not a particularly high payout ratio for a utility. Actually it seems quite reasonable.

  • This Tobacco Giant Remains Attractive [View article]
There are many good stocks yielding more than PM. There are lots of reasons other than just dividends to own PM. The main ones are relative safety and stability.
