I own a 1933 US silver dollar. when it was minted the silver content was worth exactly that; 1 dollar.
From that time until now, the US dollar has lost 92% of its value. Therefore by your argument I should have rejected the dollar for the whole of the 20th century...luckily I didn't!

Not sure about your reference to hyperinflation, however. Though US inflation is certainly above the official %, there is no way that the US can fall into a hyperspiral. Hyperinflation is an overused and badly understood concept in any country that has not directly experienced it.

Regarding the carry trade comment: the prophets of doom were out in force late Feb on this subject. But here we are in samo samo land. Why should any short-term Yen movement seriously affect the carry trade party, mister Tanashian? I'd say we're more likely to feel a blip and then carry on carrying.
