I think it was Warren Buffett who said that the real benefits of buying back your stock depend upon whether you are paying less than its intrinsic value (good) or more (bad). I suppose that the hard part is determining what that intrinsic value is. However, we can all see that buying in your stock after a long rise isn't as smart as buying it at after a decline. If you feel that the stock is undervalued, having the company buy it back seems positive.

Great article, Chuck. I wonder if there is a way to combine a valuation approach with the Dividend Champions so as (for a simplistic example) buy a Dividend Champion only if the PE ratio is below X and sell it if it exceeds Y? One might get the best of both worlds. Nelson Lawson
