Airvana: An Opportunity in Femtocells [View article]
Femtocell has a market. however don't have high expectations.
I agree, unless this is given out for free adding one more device to a household, especially when wifi is in place and smartphones have wifi functionality, is not going to be a top priority to many customers. To me as a consumer why would I want more radiation on top of every other device in the house ?
Femto cell markets are going to be countries where cell coverage is not built up, this also means very competitive price with low margins and shopping malls, dense areas.
In my opinion, the marketing approach for it has to change. One way to market femto cell is to combine the femtocell functionality with settop boxes. Companies like comcast can deliver cable and wireless services, using MVNO model, and compete with other wireless providers.

I think Seidenberg is right. Working in the wireless sector, I know that phones are not as simple as a IPOD. Much complex and the burden will be on Apple to prove the Iphone with ATT's GSM's low speed EDGE technology. In my opinion, ATT is not going to make too much money of this deal. Time will tell.
