  • Microsoft Just Killed Itself, Apple Wins Again [View article]
It's accepted that the Zune was a superior MP3 player to the iPod. A lot of good that did!

  • Google (GOOG) is on the verge of closing a $1.3B acquisition of Waze, according to Globes. Talks with Facebook (FB) fell apart in late May over location issues. Apple (AAPL) was also thought to be a suitor of the mobile navigation app provider until Tim Cook said otherwise. [View news story]
I will miss Waze, but google knows too much about me as it is already.

  • "There are only four sources of high-quality maps," Google, Waze, Navteq, and TomTom (TMOAF.PK), says Rolfe Winkler, and given Facebook's rumored $1B acquisition of Waze, TomTom may become an attractive takeover target for the likes of Apple (AAPL) and others who, while able to drive a hard bargain on map licensing fees, may prefer to bid for the Netherlands-based company rather than worry that a rival will acquire it. TomTom trades at an EV/EBITDA ratio of just 6x. (From December: Rabobank puts AAPL/TomTom odds at 30%) [View news story]
I use Waze whenever I'm in the car. I'm usually a passenger, so I can interact with it extensively. I don't know if an acquisition by FB will keep me there, though, because I think FB (and Google) are too intrusive.

  • Apple's Living Room Strategy Can Conquer Gaming [View article]
My 14 year-old grandson (lives in an Apple house) chose to build a Winbox PC, solely for gaming. While I hold a long position in AAPL, my gaming advice stays with the kid. OTOH, if Apple came out with an integrated TV/home theater with good sound (and, gasp, a CD changer and good FM tuner, I'd jump all over it. My wife just can't cope with having to use 2 or three remotes to play anything through the Samsung HTiB, which, by the way, won't play through WiFi to my iMac, without using the Apple TV box (another remote).

"...Never have I witnessed a company so grossly mismanaged...." you haven't watched Microsoft under Ballmer, then.

  • Investing In Apple: Risk Management 101 [View article]
I, too have been buying AAPL on the way down, and will continue to do so. I remember Sculley's stupidity and don't want to see it repeated. Look at what Microsoft's open system has spawned. Millions of crap applications, .exe apps that keep IT departments busy, and a rush to the bottom to see which manufacturers can sell the cheapest piece of throwaway trash. My Macs all have had productive lives of ten years or more and have served my families, both immediate and extended, extremely well. When was the last time you got a call from someone who bragged about buying a new PC clone? How many people do you know who switched to Macs in the pays year or so? Enterprise? BYOM is here and expanding. Yes, I'm in for the long haul.

  • Time For Apple To Waddle And Quack [View article]
DRIP has pretty much always been available through the brokerage firms. Even my old Smith Barney high-commission accounts (I was an employee there and had no choice) offered commission-free DRIPs. I'd say that, unless you have your shares mailed to you in certificate form, this entire argument is a non-issue.

I do have an odd lot of PRU shares issued at the time of their demutualization, held by their custodian, and these do not offer DRIP, alas.

  • Understanding Apple's Anemic Quarter [View article]
The iPad Mini actually open up a huge market. For example, my DIL loves hers, because it fits in her purse (yes, she also has an iPhone, and an iPad2) but also has a great display. "Fits in a purse" are the operational words here. Women (and men) can carry it around, safely tucked away and out of sight.

Office 2013 @ $100 annual "subscription" for home users? No iPad support? They have lost their collective minds!

  • Microsoft Doesn't Need To Be Apple [View article]
"Still has Office" yes, but office 2013 is going to be on annual subscription of $100 a year for the home version. I see this business model as a major FAIL.

  • Rig owner Seadrill (SDRL +0.7%) sells all its existing 96M shares in embattled Sevan Drilling after a bank steps up with an “attractive offer" to buy the shares in return for a forward agreement. SDRL’s holding had moved up to 30.31% following Sevan's recent emergency equity issue to plug a funding gap; 33.3% ownership would have required a mandatory takeover offer under Oslo Stock Exchange regulations. [View news story]
Bailout money? Was it a U.S. bank? Or Norwegian or Bermuda? Neither the article nor the link detailed this.

  • I'd Pay $400 For 'This Apple' [View article]
Next great product? I'd like to see Apple bring out a really good Home Theater System (HTiB) that would be completely controlled by an iPad - totally controlled - and fully integrated with Apple TV. I have a new Samsung HTiB, and it sucks. Money down the drain. Apple could enter this neglected market and steal it.
