  • Dividend Zombies - Over 100 Years Of Uninterrupted And Undiminished Dividends (Part 1) [View article]
Good article Richard. I agree with the premise.

My one thought/concern is with the 5 year total return number. Are you starting from the bottom of the recession in 2009, or later in the year when the recovery was underway?

Either way, it is skewed to the high side since that is starting from the bottom of the recession. That said, it doesn't mean that these companies won't grow by another 150 or 200 precent over the next 5 years.

Folks should note that we are currently not at the bottom of a recession.

My 2 macro coppers... Thanks again,

Thanks for the article Brad. A good thoughtful read as always.

However I disagree with writing Puts on MAT here. All the points you make about the stock sticking in the $35 range seem valid... but I think you underestimate how much falling out of favor in the retail world means. I worked in several retail corporate offices and you could see the foot traffic numbers staying the same, but the sales numbers declining. The people who were buying, were buying less. Maybe it was me! All three companies I worked at over 10 years suffered the same slow decline.

As examples, I have written Puts on COH and TGT and in both cases I did okay. But to me, and MAT falls into this category, the long term prognosis is too questionable. Quite frankly it could be many years where the stock trades range bound sideways (though this could be a good thing if you can consistently write Puts that don't need to be repaired!!).

Just some of my thoughts on the subject. A good first SA article, thanks!

Rashbaugh said it way better than I could.

"Better to hilight the lower amount of senior debt, or the higher CLO, but NOT the higher portfolio yield. The higher portfolio yield alone is not inherently a bad thing, just a side effect."

That's what I was getting at. Its a trivial point making the chart cleaner.

Buzz - Thanks for yet another good article.

Quick comment: In your first chart you highlighted the bold "Portfolio Yield" results for PSEC in Orange, and FSC in Green. To me, this seems like a subjective way to highlight, running counter to the way the rest of the table is highlighted.

I understand what you are getting at, just interesting to read/think of a 12% yield being worse than a 10% yield.

    Thanks again,

That view of the map always reminds me of just how huge Russia is. It is staggering really!

I'm glad I purchased a full position back in March and April when they were getting a PR smack down.

    Gladly Aterosin!

I'm contemplating posting my actual portfolio as it has some other bells and whistles. Though to be honest I don't know if can handle the feedback I'll get. (Do I at least get points for self knowledge? ha!) Maybe I will put up one that is stripped down.

It is a bit complicated, and I like simple... so that's a bit at odds. Would take a while to write-up an explanation on how to work it too... which might swamp folks just getting started. I don't want to do that!

PM me if you would like a copy. Maybe you can be the guinea pig.

Glad you found it useful SP - and I hope others do too... saving time is a wonderful, it's the most valuable asset we have, ha!

Thanks BIB for the follow up comments. That is indeed the case.

SP - If you run Excel 2010 there are some API's out there where you can pull stock data directly into Excel. MSN and Morningstar both offer something. However I have used neither and can't tell you how to use them, or what they do. For older versions you can run plug-ins and macro's, but if you are security conscious then you might want to shy away from those.
