  • WSJ: Intel to announce $54/share Altera deal on Monday [View news story]
Worst M&A reporting from journalist ever,

    $15B offer for $54/share, then
    $16B offer for $54/share, then
    $17B offer for $54/share.

If you don't know the detail, don't report the offer price.

Long term investment is as good as cash to me just like the way you treat long term debt as -ve item. We'll find out the exact detail soon enough.

If you include $1.5B of debt then you have to include $4.6B of cash too. Fair?

WSJ said the price tag is $17B. How that translate to $54/share is beyond me.

Intel stock up 14.63% since 3/27/2015, the day the Altera rumor started while QQQ is up 5.21% during the same period. That extra 9.42% in outperformance is enough to pay for Altera (net of $3.1B cash&investment in Altera's B/S).

Tx, if there are cheaper and better alternatives, don't you think Intel will explore those first? If you don't think Intel management is able to make a strategic semiconductor related M&A decision, you should sell the stock.

Thanks RSA. I guess I am not smart enough to understand the difference between liquid B/S and liquid asset. The point is both INTC and QCOM can afford ALTR if they want to buy it. QCOM has DCG ambition. If Intel do takeover ALTR, you can't expect QCOM to catch up to Intel in data center and cloud server technology ever.

    RSA, you be the judge,

QCOM: 15555 cash, 14171 working capital, 14055 long term investment, 0 debt
INTC: 14118 cash, 11431 working capital, 11598 long term investment, 12,112 long term debt

    TIA.

Bruce, $54 is the minimum takeout price. If offered, Intel run the risk of being outbid by Qualcomm which has DCG ambition and a stronger B/S. A $56-$58 takeout price may seal the deal for good and save a bidding war down the road.

txbadonetoo, ask yourself this question, who is more knowledgeable, experienced and passionate about the business of "Intel", you or Kryzanich?

Good point on Qualcomm, which should bid for Altera or Xilinx ASAP.

Don't forget ALTR has $3.1B net cash in its BS. Every penny counts in M&A.

50% on top of $34 = $51, not $30 PS in your original comment.

Xilinx won't sell cheap. Intel still needs to pay a change of control premium for it. Furthermore, Altera's 14nm foundry agreement with Intel precludes a Xilinx acquisition.
