Is Harvest Energy Trust's Premium Valuation Justified? [View article]
To User 167894. I hold HTE in my IRA. The only way I have found to reclaim the 15% Canadian tax witholding is by withdrawing the dividends from my IRA (I'm over 59 1/2) so the earnings become part of my gross income (AGI). I then claim the foriegn tax credit for the HTE dividend income on my tax return. According to the IRS rules, the foriegn tax credit can only be claimed on income that is part of your taxable AGI. Since dividend income in an IRA is not part of your AGI, the foriegn tax credit cannot be taken if it remains in the IRA.
Cellulosic Ethanol: The Next Biofuel Boom? [View article]
An interesting article on cellosic ethanol. I believe it's nuts to produce ethanol from corn and other products that deplete the food supply. Cellulosic ethanol has two huge advantages over ethanol made from sugar and starch, namely, it's abundant... and free. The National Laboratory estimates that America throws away 323 million tons of cellulose every year in household trash, wood waste, mill residues, and corn and wheat stalks. In theory, this wasted cellulose could provide 30% of the country's current fuel needs.
Good article, but Mr. Hodge needs some help when he claims that CO2 is "the main greenhouse gas". It is if Water Vapor is ignored. Water Vapor makes up over 95% of the earth's greenhouse gases. CO2 is actually a rather minor greenhouse gas in comparison. CO2 makes up about 3% of the total greenhouse gases.
