Friedman's idea for a $1.00/gallon tax on gasoline comes from a mindset of living on the East Coast where there is pretty good public transportation and distances between cities and states are small compared to Western States. The only fair tax would be a National Sales Tax but politicians would likely squander it on their own "pet projects".

What he fails to mention is that most of these appliances are no longer produced in the USA but in countries with lower costs thus costing less for the American consumer who is unemployed and has a Congress that continues to spend and spend.
Gas may be at all time prices but at least it's available at the pump. When the government got involved in the 1970's we had long gas lines, limited to 10 gallons each and the stations were open only a few hours a day due to mismanagement by authorities. If we want lower prices and be less energy dependent on foreign sources then we need to allow drilling in Alaska, the eastern gulf of Mexico, and the East and West coasts of the USA along with building of new refineries less likely to be hit by hurricanes along the Gulf Coast.
