It is interesting to me that working in retirement seems to be the theme of financial planners which actually isn't retirement is it? I believe that the notion of the traditional retirement is what is causing the disconnect. Modern era workers (age 55-65 now) are forced into working during retirement due to many factors not the least of which is company cut backs and high unemployment which regardless of what you think, the jobs will go to younger workers first. The first step in approaching retirement is a realistic budget. Many costs are fixed and will increase. We only have control over the variable costs. Health care, tax and insurance for our stuff are the primary threats as we age. Planners can set the percentage of outflow where ever they want, the bottom line is that most non working americans with 1M in savings don't have enough to cover costs without taking a decrease in lifestyle. If you can get to zero debt before retiring you stand a much better chance of making it work but be careful with the house. You won't be able to get a home equity or line of credit for repairs or improvements without a high enough percentage of earned income. Take a look at establishing a line of credit on your paid for home at todays low rates just prior to retiring. That way the money is there is you need it without taking away savings. If you can earn 3-4% on savings its a smart move even though you maintain some debt.

Very interesting read. I enjoy your articles as they generally run counter to my directional assessment. Its time to buy more AAPL and stay long with current shares. Apple is a very different company from those you use as reference points. They like any company can stubble and fail but with your three year horizon I feel its more likely they go up from here. I don't expect iPhone 1 launch style market dominance but nice steady growth, that is debt free, while paying a dividend is just fine with me. I look forward to your followup article and how you value their eco system.

Long apple and plan to stay there. The recent stock pricing has been an education in what a company that is disconnected from its stock looks like. At some point in the future both will once again meet and the robust Apple business will reward all who understand what stock manipulation and hysteria looks like. It might be awhile before it climbs back to $700 but dropping and holding a low price seems to me improbable.

Retirement is as you stated simply not getting income for work it doesn't mean you stop making money or contributing. I would add to the spend less than you make comment by emphasing putting money in your "memory" bank. Funding memorable events inside a budget is where the joy comes from. Lots of confusion on this concept. Thank you for your comments. My broker lists the issue as a preferred stock. It is still trading at high volumes. It looks like waiting until after the 19th is prudent which should end the confusion. I checked again this morning and there is a single line reference to the next call date scheduled as March 2013 that I had not seen. I'll keep my eye on volumes. Again thanks for all the thoughtful comments. If this doesn't pan out I plan on researching others that the thesis will apply to.

btbriant- I agree with your thoughts on holding off other brand purchases with the uncommitted. I always need to remember that its not only the consumers thinking about a new phone its also the store employees and if Nokia comes out with aggressive pricing or carrier incentives then there could be some steerage to Nokia. I have read that the 920 will be available in some markets early November.

Sorry about the company description. I used yahoo as the source and should have gone directly to Nokia. I completely agree with the comments that Nok is now a mobile phone company and the other business units are less important for its survival.

Paul I always read your articles and appreciate your work and analysis. I think in the case of the first major product refresh cycle in two years that the tactics in this article are too risky for the rewards. In my last article http://seekingalpha.co... I outlined an options plan that I executed and is up nearly 70%, is more conservative and looks to be more profitable. I stay away from having shares called away with Apple. It's to difficult to recapture the basis with such growth. I agree with your price target of $750. Good hunting and thanks for the article.

I believe Microsoft will have a successful roll out and long term winner with their metro suite. I very wise man I used to work with always said that there was enough share for all of is (competitors) just focus on what you can do better and the share will follow. There is a consumer driver not mentioned but underpins the os change. If people can buy a tablet that is elegant and it can be used as the main computer they will buy it rather than a traditional pc and a tablet. Metro by what ever name on new generation tablets is a game changer. One similar interface across mobile, tablet and pc is an enviable market position that consumers desire. Sound familiar?

Todd thank you for writing this article. I listened to their last conference call and started looking through their latest report. It looks like a nice add to a dividend portfolio. Do you think this is an appropriate investment for an Ira that is taking mandatory retirement distributions? The math looks to match up well as the dividend would go along way to keep the value up.

Nice article and good work on putting this together. Its not easy to maintain diversification with five holdings but this portfolio is a good representation of what can be done in a spooky market with good company selection and dividends. My top holdings are similar. The total portfolio has many more holdings including bonds and gold but is a close parallel to your model.
