Half pay is prevalent. Relative of mine said his company (fewer than 30 employees) cut his hours (he was at 39 hrs) to less than 30 hrs in order NOT to have to pay for Obamacare. Then, the company hires others for less than 30 hours. He thinks many will default on their mortgages for this reason. He has a mortgage and is desperate for more work.

  • The Dirty Secret About The 1929 Stock Market Crash [View article]
Or how about a story today: my friend's husband died. He had a $230,000 loan to fund his small business and he took loans from his insurance companies. Bank loans were anchored by blue chip stocks in both their names. Bank called the loan on the wife. Said they do not take stock as collateral any more and that she would need to take out a reverse mortgagage (cost $600 to fill out the papers). She declined. Sold her stock and paid off the loan. Oh, and the banker knew her for over 20 years.

  • The Double-Edged Sword With DRIP Dividend Investing [View article]
For married couples that own a small business, DRIPs are the way to go. A brokerage account containing most all your assets is too easy to dip into when your business needs funds. I dripped most of my stocks over the years and it worked out fine. Another thing, when you have one hold-all brokerage account, the tax preparer sees this lump and their prices go up. Starting a DRIP account for a child is also good and pays off in the long-run. The child sees his statement and his interest is aroused about the stock market. Many DRIP clearing jhouses still do not report accurate gains/losses when you sell a stock. You need to keep records.
