Bad News For Blockbuster Shareholders [View article]
Sounds good to me. Can you please give me the cost breakdown before I cancel my $20 Blockbuster subscription? I'd like to watch my movies on my TV and not my computer... call me old fashioned. I'm ok at burning dvds, but they still cost $1 or $2 each, and typically single layer dvds can't hold a full movie. I typically watch 1-3 movies a week, and I'd like a selection similar to Blockbuster or Netflix.
So far, the closest is Tivo/Unbox. Tivo Box is > $100, $17/month subscription. Unbox video download rental is $4 (with restrictions, limited selection).
BBI or Netflix $50 DVD player, $20/month subscription, Every video is $0 ( no restrictions, large selection)
Tivo would cost me $40+ more per month.
As for Apple, they are always overpriced, so I'm not even going to check. Netflix download would require a cable running from my computer to my tv...and my wife would shoot that down.
Blockbuster: Until It Acknowledges Some Realities, I'm Avoiding Shares [View article]
I'd be surprised if $3.99 per rental at Amazon will cause anybody to drop their BB subscription. I can already use pay-per-view on TWC at about the same price and I still rely exclusively on BB. I suppose when every one in the US has a cable modem, DVR or TIVO, and signs up for the yet unavailable 10+ movie download package for under $20, things might slow down for BB. I wouldn't hold my breath.
Hold On to Blockbuster, Despite Disappointing Earnings [View article]
The only way I see VOD as a threat to BB is through the cable co and downloaded directly onto the DVR. I doubt people will trouble much with downloads via the computer.
Netflix, Blockbuster: Time for the Online Rental Wars? [View article]
I switched from netflix (and sold my nflx) to sign up for blockbuster (and buy bbi). Rental terms are the same price and I do return 1 or 2 movies a month at the store. Why BBI will dominate. 1)Dad refuses to pay late fees, and constantly bug everyone to watch/return the movie and so opts for online. 2)Mom and kids want immediate gratification when a big release comes out - thus the ocassional store run.
I actually can't believe netflix doesn't partner with Hollywood or some other video chain. They will hang around, but they are making a big mistake.
