  • A No-Brainer Dividend Growth Investment [View article]
Well, the yogurt smoothie has considerably more sugar than the equivalent liquid volume of Coca Cola, but if for you that is healthy, good on ya! Even the McCrap you mention has the equivalent of almost 2 teaspoons of sugar. So, one yogurt smoothie and one McCrap is +- almost THIRTEEN TEASPOONS of granulated sugar. (+- because the grams to teaspoon conversion is somewhat dependent of the granularity of the sugar).

I will have to say that anyone arguing that McDonalds food is healthy is clinging to a pretty thin reed. I haven't even got into the issue of simple carbs & salt. Probably the healthiest meal you could have would be to chuck the food and eat the wrappers. I like the company OK actually, but there is really not much of an argument to be made about the quality of their food from a nutrition point of view. And we all know they put the "healthy" items on their as a way to help people justify going in there. Then they order a diet coke with a big mac and fries and figure it is a balanced meal.

That is an interesting fund. Tough couple of years for an all short ETF, but that can all change in a hurry. I was surprised at the their holdings though. Not the ones I would have picked. We should have a "short picking" contest, everyone pick 5 shorts and check back in a 3 months or whatever.

  • Time To Play Starbucks? [View article]
Cards are actually one of the most profitable items a store can sell. A shocking percentage of card value is NEVER redeemed, And, according to Consumer Reports, 25% of gift cards have not been redeemed after a year. (Talk about free float!!! Can you imagine getting that much money interest free!!!) Additionally, as pointed out by Barn Al, people who do use cards often become regular customers and spend more. Not sure what the short term future is for SBUX, but it is hard to believe it will not be a winner for a long time.

  • IBM: Must-Sell Amid Watson Problems [View article]
You think some guy named Seeking Profits can manipulate the price of IBM by his article on Seeking Alpha???.... Well, I mean REALLY??? I have definitely seen Micro Caps / Small Caps move from SA articles, but unless Warren Buffet is sitting around reading SA (hahahahaha) and suddenly wets his pants when he reads this article, IBM price will not budge from this article, I assure you.

I would say conservatively I have patronized Starbucks 150 times in last year and have never stood in line 10 minutes once. Or paid more than $4 for a drink for that matter. Not the greatest coffee, but drinkable. I wonder why your experience and mine are so different?

  • Having A Pension Allows Greater Flexibility With Dividend Growth Stock Selection [View article]
One consideration that may apply to pensions that does not apply as much for SS is that some pensions do NOT have COLA. Therefore they carry more inflation risk than does SS, which at least has some COLA built in. I agree with your basic premise however. Also, not just the venerable Mr Knapp makes the point about including SS as fixed income. This is a point that has been made by John Bogle as well. Congrats on first article.

That is an interesting questions isn't it? Almost 60% of bankruptcies are medically related, so BK should definitely drop in the long run. And here in California at least, it has been calculated that the price of having everyone on medical coverage is approximately the same as having the the previous number of insured plus the amount the govt had to pay out to emergency wards and clinics for the uninsured. I hope, though who knows, that more people having reasonable health and less bankruptcies will actually benefit the economy in the long haul, but we will not know for awhile.
