  • Bloomberg: New Apple TV set-top on tap, TWC talks ongoing [View news story]
Google and Amazon each has it's turf, but neither is a premium consumer brand. This race should be Apple's to lose, if only they can settle on a product that is special enough to satisfy their own standards.

  • Seadrill could be headed for a dividend cut, Wells Fargo says [View news story]
Seadrill has two kinds of holders: those in the game for the growth in the next 2-3 years based on backlog and new deliveries, albeit grateful for the dividend, and those who own it solely for the dividend and would just as happily own anything else if it paid a guaranteed half-point more. A 20% cut in the dividend would be healthy for everyone. To argue that they won't have access to ample more credit flies against history, against the nature and relationships of the key players, and against the current outlook of European bankers.

  • Apple: Tim Cook's Brilliant Move [View article]
"Special dividends" treat long and short-term holders alike. That's neither fair nor smart. Maybe they should make the dividend proportional to how long you have held the stock.

Further, stockholders should be all in favor of helping the shorts to dig deeper and deeper holes.

  • Apple: A Piggy Bank Forever? [View article]
Pretty funny. No other company in the business comes close to enjoying the advantages enumerated in your first paragraph.

If Gates were running Apple, he would now drop the price on the 5C and blow a huge hole in the market share and margins of all the camp-followers. Cut off their air supply.

And if Willie Sutton were an investment manager, he'd buy Apple, "because that's where the money is!"

  • Bob Galvin Turning In His Grave [View article]
My dad was a loyal friend and great admirer of Bob Galvin for decades. He made some tragic errors as well as many great business decisions, but his intentions were always the best and his leadership stellar. He felt responsibility to employees and to stockholders to an exceptional degree. God rest his soul.

  • Apple Will Beat Street Estimates, A Buy Is Justified [View article]
Excellent research, but a few dimes on a closed quarter is not the question. Apple will still be making tons of free cash when most of you will be lucky to be sipping soup through a straw. The high end never ends. A longing for the leveling of the best is a natural but vicious impulse. Struggle to eschew that impulse, and the world will be clearer. Cook is the institutionalization of Jobs. Ride with it.

Are you saying that people who are dumb enough to buy an Android phone are too dumb to operate it properly? Is that your point? Can that be proven? Links?

  • Intel's Time Is Running Out [View article]
Intel seems to be taking some time and some money to re-position itself competitively. Meanwhile the business seems to be better than flat. BFD. What's a year? This could be a huge winner; most things could not. Place some orders under the market and take a vacation.

  • Intel: Earnings Post Mortem [View article]
Dumb is not the question. Rather ask, "Why are these guys so flanged to the track?" And "is that changing and when"? I remember Ashraf saying, in effect, that Intel would crush ARM and that X86 would rule the world. I asked at the time if that wasn't an "Andy Grove vision"? A sort of a hangover from "the old Intel", where such things really did (almost) happen. This is a bigger problem than "missing mobile", a more systemic and potentially enduring problem. Worrying about an empty building is a waste of time; better ask whether and when they will arrive like thunder at 14nm and beyond.
