Rethinking Gold Asset Allocations For 2013 [View article]
I will admit, I have not ever held gold, so yes, by default, I missed the gold ride.
I do not want to try to time anything by saying "yes" its a good time to own a mortgage, but if you can lock yourself into a fixed rate and have the MEANS to pay it, if you a buyer, I think it could be done.

Two things stand out
1: "What you're likely to find is that, while eight or 10 years ago, virtually no one owned precious metals"
Unlike you, that scares me. While some argue that "printing money" "caused inflation" which would be a reason for people to buy gold and it to go up so dramatically, that is simply wrong. There have been a myriad of article written to show that gold does not perform any better in an inflationary environment that a deflationary one. And two, any one who thinks this "printed money" (which is not even printed money) is causing inflation is out of their mind. Sure the prices of somethings have gone up, but if monetary policies are set around the CPI and you set your agenda to something else, good luck.
2. "I think 20 percent is a good place to start"
I think a 20% reduction in your current allocation to gold would be a good place to start. QEi^forever didn't take gold to $2,000, the gold story is done.
RIM (RIMM -21.2%) has added to its losses, as worries about the impact of BB10's services pricing mount. Goldman, which upgraded RIM to Buy last month (I, II), suggests investors are overreacting, since BB7 won't be affected. But Deutsche is less sanguine, forecasting RIM's service revenue will fall 20% each of the next 2 years. Ditto CLSA, which is "downgrading" shares to Sell from Underperform. "RIMM’s business model is being challenged by operators that are unwilling to both subsidize devices aggressively and hand over a slice of their data revenue." (transcript) [View news story]
Kinda like people betting on the iPhone 5 being a success? oops.
Research In Motion (RIMM): FQ3 EPS of -$0.22 beats by $0.13. Revenue of $2.73B (-47% Y/Y) beats by $70M. 6.9M BlackBerrys shipped, 255K PlayBooks. BlackBerry subs fell by 1M Q/Q to 79M. Shares halted. (PR) [View news story]
Comex gold finished with sharp losses, -1.6% to $1,670.70/oz. and its lowest settlement since Aug. 30, and futures continue to spiral lower, down ~2% at $1,664. The usual reasons are cited - expectations of a fiscal cliff resolution, a drop in the U.S. current account deficit, rising homebuilder confidence - but gold has been losing out in a recent trend toward riskier assets. If you still own gold you should re-think your philosophy
S&P warns that while cash hoarding and under-investment by U.S. corporations may have helped them through the financial crisis, it is "unsustainable," and may be exposing them to "competitive disadvantages in product innovation, manufacturing efficiency and technology." With firms cutting an estimated $175B in investment from 2009-2011, leading non-financial companies held a record $1.26T in cash balances as of June this year. [View news story]
Might the Fed announce a new $45B monthly Treasury purchase program when it meets this week (Tues-Wed, to be followed by Bernanke press conference)? These purchases would replace those from Operation Twist, which expires this month. The Twist was notable in that its purchases were offset with sales of shorter-term debt. A new purchase program without sales would be far more expansionary. [View news story]
Sooooo when is this going to start working? These low rates are not substantially helping anyone.

It would appear that this time there would be more of a reason to hold gold, but those "reasons" have yet to drive the price of gold any higher.
There is no longer that euphoria that surround gold like there was a couple a years ago.
It lost its luster.....
