  • Volatile 3D Systems (DDD -5.6%) continues to sell off in the wake of Citron Research's bearish report. Some industry peers are also falling: PRLB -4.1%. XONE -3.7%. SSYS -1.6%. Fidelity recently disclosed it bought 3.1M shares of 3D Systems in Q4, raising its stake in the company to 6.1%. [View news story]
    The volatility on such new technology was too much for me; last month I decided to watch the manufacturers and wait until we have a 3D printer on the market for consumers before getting back into the 3D trade.

  • Cisco (CSCO +0.1%) is barely changed heading into today's FQ2 report. Shares are up 25% since a market-pleasing FQ1 beat was delivered and near their 52-week high, but still only trade at ~7.5x FY13E EPS exc. net cash. Street sentiment is split between those worried about higher expectations and soft IT spending, and those optimistic about margin improvements, rising software sales and the performance of faster-growing hardware segments, such as UCS servers[View news story]

  • Between ExOne's (XONE) stellar IPO and the 2012 gains seen by 3D Systems (DDD) and Stratasys (SSYS), it's clear investors are expecting big things from 3D printers. But low R&D spending could stall the industry's progress, warns Ashlee Vance. Unlike chips or hard drives, there's no guarantee of steady technology advances for printer nozzles and plastic melting. DDD and SSYS respectively spent just 6% and 9% of their 2011 revenue on R&D; Vance is more positive on upstarts such as Shapeways, who are finding ways to significantly cut production and materials costs. [View news story]
    Agreed; I did not stay in my full position and sold it in increments last week.
    really did not like the price action and didn't want to write covered calls.
    There will be plenty of time to re-enter should this become as the laser printer is.
    I don't like this market, now.

    The California legislature is fighting Amazon's tax-exempt history; as they lease the most expensive automobiles that they can get away under their "car allowance" policy.
    Citizens of California examine your legislator's expenses as they take take and take more to pad their salaries.
    California is getting too expensive to support its citizen legislators as many don't take the time to examine who is taking through their taxing powers.

    That may be; I liken it to skippering a dinghy with a tiller; it's far more accurate to steer a boat with a tiller; the sensitivity of pushing on the tiller and moving the bow is 1:1 pressure and movement;
    the lag in movement is problematic when maneuvering in tight company.
