  • Yield Trap: The PIMCO High Income Fund Is Too Good To Be True [View article]
the premium to nav is just too much to pay...even for pimco management! although in some cef's especially option income funds roc is not bad!

  • Mortgage REITs continue to slide - NLY -1%, AGNC -2%, HTS -2.3%, to name 3 - the sector revaluing itself for what must surely be significant dividend cuts. The Fed's MBS purchases - likely to help book values and dividend maintenance in the short run - are vaporizing net interest margins. Absent a big jump in leverage, returns must fall. [View news story]
stay calm!..... this fall in prices is not as dramatic as the press release would suggest... i think the poster above that says if you treat these as part of a fixed income portion of your portfollio you will sleep better is correct...also rising book values can be a good thing...if managed correctly

  • MLP Secondaries: The Great, The Good, And The Risky [View article]
i got out of line way too early ...bought at 16 sold at 26.... good profit but i was way too antsy on pulling the plug... qre was a steal down at $16 ish. Sometimes i sell mlp's when i have locked in say 2 years of distributions in cap gains in a very short time period... it has worked sometimes but with line it did not and cost me.

  • Covered Calls For Income Can Cost Dearly In Long-Term Gains [View article]
you do not have to write calls that are close to in the money. i choose to sell " more time" but set a higher strike price. conversely when i sell a put i also sell "more time" but set a much lower strikeprice ( at least 20%) on quality companies

  • Should Anyone Buy MLPs Yielding 19%? [View article]
i think there is a place for the whole "spectrum" of income producing assets. There is a place in a portfollio for the 2-4% yielders because if we go down the drain a pg or emr or so will at some point recover where as a riskier higher leveraged higher yielding security may go to zero...that said in this day of 0% rates to automatically just dismiss a 9-12% yield as too risky is foolish also. i have held ncv ( a cef) for over 7 years and have been paid back my original principal and then some...it yields over 11% and sells at a premium to nav....against all conventional wisdom it has paid off in spades!

  • Should Anyone Buy MLPs Yielding 19%? [View article]
im not sure about an mlp that yields 19% ...but im not against having a "single plant , product mlp mixed in... take uan or pdh for an example ...bought pdh at 11 bucks uan sub 20. will there be more distribution ups and downs than say epd ...well yes BUT there will some big up times also... just like now ..."coal" is dead forever...i think not but one will have to have a 3-5 year time horizon and block out all the noise in the meantime.....sometimes thats hard to do

agree! my point was that there is no "free ride" i own many mlp's some "safer"... epd, ngls, kmp, oks, and some that have more risk... clmt, uan, vnr, pse, eroc. but combined they are only 10% of total investments... i "refuse" to sit in treasuries

  • 3 Strategic Value Trades [View article]
chrw is a winner longterm... they are currently in the part of the "cycle" where margins are being compressed ..this has lasted longer than previous transportation cycles...BUT they are winning market share for the long term. This company thinks long term and creates value long term. ie they just bought a company with $100 mil revenues in Europe. CHRW has a nice divy that has increased every year since going public and has a buy back in place that reduces shares outstanding every quarter.... chrw longterm is a buy in the mid $50's
